Job Summary:
A Registered Polysomnography Technologist employed by Erlanger Medical Center works under medical supervision to independently perform and evaluate overnight polysomnograms, MSLTs and oximetries, as well as operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology.
The RPSGT has the skills and knowledge to perform complex and non-routine recordings.

Required: High school education or its equivalent.

Preferred: Completion of an AMA approved program in polysomnography, EEG, or Respiratory Care is preferred.

Required: Current on testing equipment with 6 months experience.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required: Current Certificate for Registered Polysomnographic Technologist and licensed in the State of Tennessee.

Department Position Summary:
A RPSGT functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep.wake physiology. The RPST administers oxygen and positive airway pressure devices in accordance with established protocols, applies recording devices to the patient, and performs cleaning/disinfecting of equipment. The RPSGT must recognize sleep pathology when it occurs and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety. The RPSGT must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for the age of the patient. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span, posses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient�s status and interpret the information to identify each patient�s requirements for care.

A Registered polysomnography Technologist has the skills and knowledge to perform complex and non-routine recordings such as nocturnal seizure testing, MSLTs, etc. The Polysomnography Technologist functions to assist and supervise the selection of a suitable course of action when necessary.

The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist assists in the implementation of clinical protocols, participates in the development and implementation of inservice education, making recommendations for continuing education. The RPSGT is able to accurately and reliably stage and score polysomnogram recordings with a high degree of accuracy and prepare clinical reports for physician interpretation. The RPSGT has a thorough understanding of sleep pathology and treatment options for the varying sleep disorders.
