Job Summary:
The EEG Technician is trained to operate EEG Machines in effort to measure and record the electrical activity of the brain primarily to assist in the diagnosis of epilepsy/seizure disorders. The EEG Technologist is responsible for providing and administering Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by physicians. The EEG Technician will gather and document a patient�s medical history, explain the testing procedure, prepare the patient for the procedure, and perform the procedure adhering to general electrodiagnostic and lab standards (per standard policy manual). The EEG Technician is responsible for reporting critical findings to the physician. The above process is to be completed with primary emphasis on safety of the patient, and ensuring a quality study. The EEG Technologist is also responsible for maintaining patient and department related documentation.

Education:
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Registered EEG Tech (R. EEGT.) within the first 6 months of hire date

Preferred:
Associate of Science Degree, Bachelor of Science Degree

Experience:
Required:
Two to Three years hospital experience

Preferred:
Minimum of 3 years experience in the field of Neuro-diagnostics
Work in an epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) setting involving hook up of studies, monitoring of EMU patients
Hooking up and monitoring long term ICU-EEG studies (can be referred to as critical care monitoring)
Monitoring above includes but is not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies, for clinical, sub clinical seizures, recognizing normal variants, recognizing and understanding the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and identifying different types if artifact and taking the necessary action to correct this.
Observing and trouble shooting the EEG (record) for quality, and making corrections as needed to maintain quality including but not limited to impedance checks, detecting salt bridges
Performing routine in and out patient EEGs
Demonstrating appropriate clinical skill and reasoning when performing, an EEG such as whether or not to perform activations, and optimizing the quality of the study.
Annotating short and long term EEG
Clipping/pruning short and long term EEG prior to archiving
Ictal seizure protocol in the EMU
First aid for seizures

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required:
BLS required within 30 days of hire.

Preferred:
Associate of Science Degree, Bachelor of Science Degree
Registered EEG Tech (R. EEGT.)

Department Position Summary:
Responsibilities and Duties � based on designated/classified level of the technician

Technician Level (3)
Monitoring/watching ongoing long term EEG including in the epilepsy monitoring unit and in the ICU or other general medical setting for clinical and subclinical seizures and than notifying a higher level technologist and/or physician per standard operating protocol of seizures. Recognizing and identifying the key differences between an epileptic and non-epileptic event
Disconnecting EEG studies
First Aid for seizures (basic response and positioning

Technician Level (2)
Includes the above mentioned responsibilities of technician level 3 and the below:
Performing routine in patient and out patient EEGs
Beginning (hooking up) long term video EEG studies
Correcting placement of electrodes when necessary
Monitoring above includes but is not limited to: reviewing/watching ongoing studies, for clinical, sub clinical seizures, recognizing normal variants, recognizing and understanding the significance of inter-ictal epileptiform and non-epileptiform activity, and identifying different types if artifact and taking the necessary action to correct this.
Observing and trouble shooting the EEG (record) for quality, and making corrections as needed to maintain quality including but not limited to impedance checks, detecting salt bridges
First Aid for seizures (basic response and positioning)

TECHNICIAN Level (1)
Includes the above mentioned responsibilities of technician levels 2 and 3 and the below:
supervising technicians levels 2 and 3 , and assisting with the completion of their studies
Performing skin checks
clipping and pruning the record
completing the ictal response protocol
performing injections in ictal spect cases
contacting IT and other equipment personnel for technical support issues when required.
performs other duties as assigned by the EEG lead tech or Clinical Administrator
Collecting and distributing event log sheets
Rounding with the Epileptologist

General Duties of required of all EEG technologists:
Calling patients to confirm appointments, and scheduling of studies.
Seizure response and first aid for seizure patients.
Will be required to work various shifts and take call for weekend coverage.

The EEG Technologist is responsible for performing Neurodiagnostic procedures ordered by a physician. The EEG Technologist must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other department staff members. The EEG Technologist must maintain departmental and patient-specific documentation in an organized manner.

The EEG Technologist must be able to work independently and interdependently as necessary. The EEG Technologist will be required to have a basic knowledge of computers.
