Job Description



Job Summary:
A registered professional nurse employed by Erlanger Medical Center is responsible for the initiation of intravenous lines, care of patients receiving parental nutritional support, administration of tuberculin skin tests, insertion of peripherally inserted central cathers, and responding Code Blues. Must sign the contract and abide with the rules laid out in the weekend program policy.


Required: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.


Required: One year experience in acute Medical Surgical patients
Preferred: IV insertion experience

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration

Required: Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee.
BLS required within 30 days of hire. ACLS within 3 months for Critical Care.


Department Position Summary:
The registered nurse has the responsibility of assessing the patient for vascular access and initiation of intravenous lines, assessment of central venous and peripherally inserted catheters, access and maintenance of implanted ports, initiation and care of parental nutritional support, thrombolytic decloting of central venous central lines, application and evaluation of tuberculin skin tests, and responding code blues. The nurse will also be responsible for interaction and collaboration with members of the healthcare system and participation in the clinical decision-making process relating to venous access and infusion therapy. Must be proficient in rhythm recognition. Must be will to float to all ICUs and Med surg floors at BEH, North, East campuses. Must be willing to staff ED overflow. Med surg nurses do not float to ICUs.

The individual must be able to demonstrate knowledge of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the units policies and procedures manual. This is done through evaluation of direct supervision by direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
