Machinist Tool Maker – Precision CNC Grinding- 2nd Shift

Job Description


Programs, sets up and operates conventional, CNC and special purpose machine tools to machine precision metallic and nonmetallic parts.


  • Studies blue prints, sketches, drawings or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of a finished work piece
  • Plans mode of operations and set ups to produce precision machined components.
  • Measures, marks and inscribes reference points on materials or work piece as guides for subsequent machining
  • Selects, aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on mills, lathes and grinders.
  • Calculates and program to control machining factors such as speeds and feeds for efficient and safe machining practices.
  • Observes and makes adjustments to machinery to maintain part tolerances
  • Confers with design engineering, and management to resolve machining and design problems
  • Develops sketches and drawings to produce components that do not have blue print designs with OEM specs to become functional
  • Fits and assembles precision parts to complete a final assembly
  • Verifies sizes to the correct designed dimension in tolerance on machined parts
  • Use CAD and CAM to program and operate CNC machine tools
  • Performs finishing hand operated bench jobs such as filing, stoning grinding and polishing surfaces
  • Performs final part inspections by using calibrated electronic and manual measuring tools
  • Measures and determines repairs needed on worn and damaged components in need of metal removal or metal build up for refitting and renewal to operating specifications
  • Maintain all machine tool preventive maintenance and cleanliness responsibilities as recommended by the OEM
  • Works closely with the mold maintenance technicians to trouble shoot and repair production mold and printing components
  • Works closely with the other specialized machinist tool makers and design engineers to correctly complete all new and rebuilding mold activities
  • Understands all Airlite mold assemblies as they pertain to each individual mold component and how they function
  • Documents any design revisions due to machining mistakes, design errors and refitting activities
  • Documents labor hours used for each job for historical data base
  • Maintains company policies and attendance standards.
  • Performs training for newly hired employees
  • Ensures thorough and accurate shift change over communication
  • Other duties as assigned


Associate's degree (AA) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; Or a minimum of 5 years of machining experience to include CNC and manual machines acquired through a formal apprenticeship program


This job has no supervisory responsibilities


  • Previous experience with mold building for thin walled packaging solutions is preferred.
  • Must have knowledge of all basic hand tools, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blue prints and procedure manuals, write routine reports and speak effectively with company employees and representatives.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractional and decimals. Ability to convert imperial numbers into metric. Ability to use trigonometry and geometry formulas.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Individual must have basic G code and M code knowledge, CNC programming and Cam experience.
  • Works a minimum of 45 hours weekly. Works holidays as required by company maintenance priorities, machine installation schedules and plant emergencies.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is seasonally and moderately exposed to humid conditions and heat. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, the risk of electrical shock and exposure to extreme molten plastic temperature. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
