The Employment Specialist is responsible for creating an environment where individuals with disabilities can find success in the employment arena.  The Employment Specialist will develop jobs and provide job supports that are appropriate to the individual’s skills and desires S/he will work cooperatively with the individuals receiving services, their families, staff and all stake holders.

The Employment Specialist will report directly to the Supported Employment Program Manager.  In addition, s/he will perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Crossroads of Western Iowa.


To perform the Employment Specialist job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of the position. 

 The Employment Specialist will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Bachelor's degree or four years of relevant experience, preferably in human services, sociology, psychology, education, human resources, marketing, sales or business  
  • Must obtain and maintain a nationally recognized certification (ACRE, CESP or similar) as an employment specialist, within 2 years of hire.  (Staff hired prior to May 4 2016 have until May 3 2018 to complete certification.)
  • Must hold or obtain a nationally recognized certification in job training and coaching within 2 years of hire or 2 years from the effective date of the rules change.  (Staff hired prior to May 4 2016 have until May 3 2018 to complete certification.)
  • Complete 9.5 hours of employment services training through Direct Course (IACP) or courses from Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators(ACRE) certified training programs within 6 months of hire.  (Staff hired prior to May 4, 2016 have until November 5, 2016 to complete training.)
  • Following the completion of 9.5 hours of employment services training; complete 4 hours annually of continuing education in employment services.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic reading, writing and math skills
  • The ability to be flexible as to schedule and hours. 
  • Possess computer knowledge with emphasis on Microsoft office programs
  • Valid Chauffeur’s license and a driving record that is acceptable to Crossroads of Western Iowa’s auto insurance company.
  • Must secure and maintain a private phone.
  • Obtain and maintain a Certification in CPR and First Aid
  • Able to push, pull, lift and/or transfer up to 50 pounds

Essential Duties

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following essential functions:

  • Must be familiar with all HIPAA regulations and employ safeguards as directed by HIPAA laws and the CWI Compliance Officer
  • Work with persons served to identify barriers to employment, advise and guide a diverse population of individuals to ascertain employability by analyzing interviews, tests and other sources to develop a plan for employment.  Implementing the plan to provide resume writing, job search, interviewing techniques, initial job training and to facilitate natural supports within the work place. 
  • Develop a network of business and agency contacts to facilitate integration in the area of community employment by attending job fairs, participating in on-line trainings, presentations, group orientations and other outreach activities.
  • Ensure compliance with employment law guidelines, mandates and documentation of services for IVRS, Ticket to Work, Wavier and other funding sources. 
  • Look for ways to promote continuous improvement by remaining abreast of new trends by attending workshops, seminars, conferences, meetings, etc as needed. 

The Employment Specialist assumes other responsibilities as assigned by designated Coordinators, CWI Directors or CEO.

Physical Demands

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Employment Specialist’s job.  Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable people with disabilities to perform the described essential functions of this position. 

While performing the responsibilities of the Employment Specialist’s job, the employee is required to talk and hear.  The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard.  The employee is often required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision.

The employee must be able to travel between locations, and occasionally attend seminars which may require an overnight stay.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.  Work may require weekend and/or evening hours.  Working conditions will vary with the types of jobs found for individuals with disabilities.


Salary range will be within the annually budgeted figure. Actual salary is subject to Board approval.
