Specialty/Infusion Pharmacy Technician

Job Description:
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for compounding and preparing pharmaceuticals under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in accordance with state and federal regulation, dispensing documents and established guidelines. Assists the pharmacist in the performance of other Pharmacy Department duties in accordance with Company policies and procedures. This position is based out of our Phoenix, AZ pharmacy.

Primary Responsibilities:

1.  Operates pharmacy systems and software in order to obtain patient and drug information, process prescriptions, and perform other necessary functions on the system in accordance with policies and regulations. 

2. Complete all calculations on product preparations and obtain validation from the Pharmacist prior to compounding/mixing. 

3.Prepare labels, prescription and compounding/mixing worksheets and complete and maintain product lot numbers and expiration dates and batch records. 

4. Provide accurate and timely compounding and preparation of pharmaceuticals for patients and providers. 

5. Prepares accurately, through the proper use of equipment and techniques, sterile and stable infusions. 

6. Ensure compounding/clean room areas and related equipment are cleaned, sanitized and maintained in compliance with company policies and procedures. 

7. Adhere to all accreditation, OSHA, FDA, state, local and federal regulations and standards relevant to infusion pharmacy. 

8. Reports, immediately, prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and adheres to 

9. Company policies and procedures in relation to pharmacy errors and the Quality Improvement Program.

10. Processes manual claims for third party program prescription services, and performs other clerical duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.

11. Performs duties assigned by the Pharmacy Manager relation to inventory control such as ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing shipment of pharmaceuticals and supplies; processing claims for shortages/overages and damages in shipments, and returning outdated and overstocked merchandise. 

12. Handles telephone calls that do not require personal attention of the pharmacist. 

13. Performs duties as assigned by Pharmacy Manager relating to preparing refills of unit dose prescriptions orders for institutions, when required. 

14. Maintains knowledge of Company loss prevention techniques. 

15. Completes assignments and works on special projects as instructed by the Pharmacy Manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • HIPAA trained and /or the ability to work with and protect extremely confidential patient and employee information 
  • One year experience of aseptic preparation of infusion related pharmaceuticals preferred 
  • Prior IV admixture experience preferred

Licensure and Certification Requirements:

  • Current unrestricted state registration. Completes additional state registrations as requested. 
  • Certified as a licensed technician through a certified national program and maintains continuing education requirements to keep license active is preferred. 
  • Certification upon hire or within state specific guidelines. 
  • IV Certification preferred
