Summary

The NorthStar Foundation is the only single-sex, male, afterschool program in Greater Omaha. NorthStar was founded to focus on the critical, unmet needs of North Omaha’s young men with the goal of helping them grow into healthy, educated, employed contributors to the community. 

NorthStar is seeking passionate education-focused individuals to work directly in academic program delivery to prepare youth for the next day of school while working on core subjects of reading, writing, and math to enhance preparedness for high school. The Academic Advisor is a front line, youth-builder role within the organization and is responsible for implementing the daily homework, test prep, and distance learning elements of the NorthStar after school program.

This position will report to an Academic Manager and at times may assist in overseeing several academic volunteers or interns (high school and college) who will be responsible for assisting in specific functions or phases of programs. This is an hourly, 9 month (August - May) position that will coordinate with a school year calendar.  Requires working after school into the evening, and approximately 25 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions include the following, and other duties may be assigned:

  • Assist with rotation of youth through program stations
  • Supervise homework study sessions while following NorthStar designed curriculum and daily plans
  • Assure safety and supervision of youth at all times
  • Ensure essential study skills (organization, proper use of agenda, note taking, reading, questioning, summarizing, test preparation, memorizing) are being taught and reviewed with youth
  • Facilitate professional development in areas of focus (reading, math, writing)
  • Integrate best practices in delivering world class content related to digital and distance learning opportunities
  • Provide table leadership at nightly dinner (facilitating discussion questions among youth)
  • Performs any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as needed basis

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be pursuing an Associates or Bachelor’s degree; secondary education students or degree preferred
  • Prior experience working with students in a public school, summer camp, or after school setting
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience with and ability to embrace the application of technology and social media tools for youth academic programs
  • First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within first 6 months of employment is required
  • Experience driving 12 passenger van preferred
  • Ability to pass background screening with acceptable driving record
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in the organization’s service population, both individually and in groups
  • Must work well with others and interface with all organization departments
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
