Student Trainee (Recreation Aid/Lifeguard)

Job Description


  • Monitors Activities within assigned swimming areas. Maintains order and enforces established rules of safety and behavior
  • Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries. When possible notifies higher grade or lead lifeguard of emergency situation.
  • Assists water safety instructor in conducting swimming lessons.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility. Assist with the checking pool water chemistry according to established schedules and instructions and documents/reports findings.
  • Performs gate control duties. Verifies that customers are authorized to use facility by checking appropriate identification. Collects admission fees, makes change, and completes appropriate forms. Reports problems to appropriate personnel.
  • Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR.


General Experience: Three (3) months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicants ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with recreational programs of summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities.
High school graduate with a diploma or have completed a General Education Diploma (GED) program. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your high school diploma or GED.
Mandatory requirement for proof of three (3) types of certification prior to employment as a lifeguard:
A current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures
- A current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification
- A current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification, which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience.
Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor.
Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.
Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally.PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position has an education requirement. You are required to provide official transcripts or proof of enrollment to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

1. Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.
2. Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position. All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.
3. Position is identified as having "regular contact with children" (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.You must be a high school graduate with a diploma or have completed a General Education Diploma (GED) program.
A U.S. citizen or a national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island).
