Job Description


The focus of the position is on curriculum development and instruction in the distance learning and online environment.  Faculty members develop curriculum for online courses delivered to more than 20,000 students and teach both in-resident and non-resident classes within core curriculum courses, and participate, as required, in exercises that support the schools course of study.  Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the ACSC program, this position may require teaching across disciplines within the school.  Faculty members are also expected to teach elective courses, advise student research projects, and pursue active research, publication, and service to Air Command and Staff College, military education, Air University, and the Air Force as directed by the dean, the college commandant, and the commander and president of Air University.


The faculty position has a focus on joint operations in general, with a particular focus on joint airpower (to include space) planning and employment.  Strong knowledge of and practical experience with joint and/or airpower strategy, command and control arrangements, organizations, and planning processes across the spectrum of military operations is highly desired.  More broadly, the position requires knowledge of service and/or joint military strategy and doctrine, national military strategy, military thought and theory, military history, joint/combined planning and joint and combined warfighting strategies. 

Incumbent must possess a minimum of a Masters Degree.  Extensive relevantprofessional experience is highly desired, as well as academic curriculum development and teaching experience.  It is desired that the successful candidate hold a doctoral degree or requisite experience in a relevant academic discipline and field, such as military or diplomatic history, international relations, security studies or a closely-related academic concentration. Demonstrated superior teaching performance and experience with Distance Learning programs is desired.  Experience in professional military education in the areas of curriculum development and teaching in the subject areas above is desired.

Academic rank for the position is open, however the focus is at the Assistant or Associate Professor.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

A minimum of a Masters degree is required.

A Secret clearance is required.

The incumbent will be required to teach within a college or school curriculum to support the mission.

Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance to perform temporary duty.

This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service.  This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

*The position will be an initial three year appointment with a one-year probationary period, with the potential for continued reappointment for additional 3-5 year terms.
