Job Description


This position is located at the 162nd Wing (Tucson, AZ) at the unit level in the ANG Aviation Wing, Operations Group at selected Air Combat Command (ACC) and Air Education Training Command (AETC) gained flying units in the Air National Guard (ANG). The primary purpose of the position is to provide ground and flight instruction in high performance unit military fighter aircraft, F-16 weapon systems.  In addition to flying training responsibilities, flight instructors perform assignments related to the operational readiness of their unit and administrative tasks in support of the Operations Group program.


APPOINTMENT FACTORS :This position is the Federal/Excepted Civil Service and is open to current members and those eligible for membership in the Arizona Air National Guard. Individual selected will receive an Indefinite Appointment

and may be converted to permanent based on availability of funds or position no longer being encumbered. 


Prior to appointment into this position, selectee must be a current member of the Arizona Air National Guard and must possess the following AFSC : 11F3H

Max Military Grade: O-5/Lt Col


Acceptance of a Federal Excepted technician position of over 179 days in length will cause termination from the Selected Reserve Incentive Program (BONUS). Individual selected will be required to take a pre-employment medical screening which will be paid for by the Agency.

Must be qualified minimum 2-ship F-16 Flight Lead and current in the F-16.

Must possess AFSC. Recruitment incentive may be authorized. Relocation incentive may be available. Advanced In-Hire Rate may be authorized for advanced qualifications.

Must have TS Security Clearance.

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) funds are not available for this position.

Applicants must: Prior to appointment, an applicants military medical record must indicate a completed and current medical physical, flight physical, medical profile, and completed/cleared drug test. Possess a valid state drivers license to operate government motor vehicles, for the state in which they live or are principally employed, in accordance with Army and Air Force Vehicle Operations Directives; and, Qualify to operate government motor vehicles and vehicular equipment for "Maintenance Purposes Only" according to Army or Air Force Vehicle Maintenance Operations Directives.

Applicants must have the following: Awarding of a current Single Scope Background Investigation according to Army or Air Force Personnel Security Program Management Directives. Award of entry level to the technician positions compatible military skill, without a completed SSBI, is authorized provided an interim Top Secret security clearance was granted.

QUALIFICATION: Airplane Flight Instructor, GS-2181-13, O1-O5

Specialized Experience: Must have at least 36 months experience, training or education possessing F-16 flight lead experience, which indicates the ability to provide ground and flight instruction in order to upgrade pilot skills to obtain maximum performance in the unit-equipped (UE) aircraft; have a minimum of  400 F-16 hours and demonstrated prior flying experience allowing members to complete demanding FTU IPUG after a short seasoning period.


1. Knowledge of airplane systems and procedures under normal, instrument and emergency conditions.

2. Ability to provide preflight briefings in the followings areas: intelligence, mission planning, weather factors and mission objectives.

3. Ability to review and analyze directives, regulations, accident reports, flying safety publications and airfield conditions.

4. Ability to plan, develop and implement unit-flying schedules.
