Job Description

Duties

  • Provide X-ray studies for doctors to use in diagnosis and treatment of various accident trauma and wide variety of defects and diseases.
  • Use all tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade such as film markers, positioning aides, portable and stationary radiographic machines, iodinated and non-iodinated contrast material, barium liquids and powders, etc.
  • Establish and maintain standards, guidelines and practices.
  • Mix film processing solutions, loads and unloads film holders, and reproduces and/or duplicates images.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Must be certified as a radiographer in this field. Public Law 97-35 requires persons who administer radiologic procedures to meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. You must submit a copy of your certification or written document from a licensed practitioner as part of your application.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

FOR GS-06: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-05) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include performing a variety of difficult radiographic examinations; receives patient, explains method of procedure, positions patient, selects and sets technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required, and makes exposures necessary for the requested procedure.

FOR GS-07: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-06) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include performing independently makes routine radiographic examinations of head, trunk, and extremities for diagnosis of illness or injuries.

FOR GS-08: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-07) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include directing the work of one or two lower grade technologists/ technicians when procedures require assistance; independently makes standard examinations; confers with radiologists to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness cut of scans, etc., to satisfy the requirements.

FOR GS-09: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-08) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices, quality assurance, and other techniques sufficient to ensure adequate safeguards are maintained, to recognize when changes of equipment or procedures might result in increased exposure and to adopt methods to prevent such exposure.

FOR GS-11: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-09) or equivalent. Specialized experience must include thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices, and other techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes, effects of radiation on living organisms, and the effects of X-ray techniques on patient and operator exposure in order to assure that adequate safeguards are maintained, recognized when changes of equipment or procedures might result in increased exposure, and recommended methods to prevent such exposure.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
INSERT KSAs

1. Ability to perform routine diagnostic radiological procedures following standard operating procedures.
2. Knowledge of x-ray equipment or diagnostic radiology equipment sufficient to monitor for proper operation, modify standard procedures to accommodate new equipment or examinations and determine when maintenance or repair is needed.
3. Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology to identify organs appearing on film sufficient to judge acceptability of radiographic films for diagnostic use and to determine proper positioning techniques.
4. Knowledge of radiographic exposure techniques, contrast media, darkroom chemistry and development techniques sufficient to provide optimal radiological material for interpretation.
5. Knowledge of basic medical terminology, radiographic abbreviations, and some medical terms for organs and functions sufficient to interpret X-ray requests, discuss need for X-ray exposures, and keep records of patients and exposures.
6. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of instruction, test and measurement principles, and instructional design and materials for development of assigned courses.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ARE YOU USING YOUR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY? You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Position may be subject to random drug testing
  • Employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, to include evenings, weekends and/or holidays
  • Shift work and emergency overtime may be required
  • Employee must maintain current certifications
  • Position may require an appropriate security clearance
