Independently inspects aircraft and determines the nature and extent of repairs to be made, using applicable technical orders as guidelines. Repairs cracks in aircraft skin. Fabricates and fits patches to damaged areas, determining repair detail necessary to retain or restore original strength. Troubleshoots aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tails, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers. Removes, forms, fits, and installs highly stressed and double contoured skins, using hand or powered drilling and cutting tools and other metal working equipment. Aligns and balances component structures and airframe using precision measuring instruments and levels. Identifies metal corrosion.Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the ability to plan, repair, fabricate, modify and installation of sheet metal parts, item, and assemblies. Sheet metal mechanic work requires knowledge of the physical properties and working characteristics of sheet metal, knowledge of tools and equipment required in the sheet metal trade. Knowledge of shop mathematics and principles.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 18 months experience in the following: inspecting aircraft and determining the nature and extent of repairs to be made; repairing cracks in aircraft skin; troubleshooting aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tail wings, cowlings, and stabilizers; manufacturing and ensuring that metal tubing, cables are fabricated and tested in accordance with drawings and specifications.
