Job Description

Duties

·    Leads five or more lifeguards/swim instructors in the performance of lifeguard, swim instructor and related swimming pool duties within multiple aquatic facilities.

·    Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning, renders first aid to injuries, and monitors activities within fitness center and swimming pool areas.

·    Conducts surveys and uses other marketing tools to determine the aquatic needs of the community.  Establishes new programs that address the specific needs of individuals, community groups, and government units.

·    Oversees swim lesson program to ensure quality and consistency of Water Safety Instruction across the program. Cleans and maintains swimming facilities.

·    Coordinates/participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR, and to provide water safety instruction for the activities and skill levels taught.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.  Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  Six months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience monitoring activities in a swimming facility and performing CPR and First Aid.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Six months of specialized experience in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position of Recreation Assistant. Specialized experience is experience gained while performing work that included (1) Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) Teachers aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); (6) Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; (7) Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; (8) Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.

OR

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):  Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 

1. Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience.

2. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor.

3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to organize data and reports regarding multiple aspects of operation such as patron user load, swim lesson user load, military training usage etc.  Ability to research and present information on variety of topics in timely manner.

4. Ability to demonstrate to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.

5. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/ balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work.  You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE:  Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ARE YOU USING YOUR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY? You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims.  Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. 

 

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

1.  Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures.  Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also have surf-rescue training specified in AFI 34-110

2.  Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized Water Safety instruction, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, Lifeguard Instructor, and Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certifications.

3.  Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification.

4.  Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.

5.  Position requires- pre employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.

6.  Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position.  All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.

7.  If position is identified as having "regular contact with children" (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.

8.  Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue.  Must be able to life and carry 45 pounds and over. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required.

9.  May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. 

10. May provide advice and guidance (e.g., orientation, lesson plans, etc.)

11. In absence of Aquatics Director resolves emergency scheduling issues regarding sick/emergency leave of employees, serves as first line of contact.
