General and Specialized Experience: six months of general experience which includes (1) any type of work which demonstrates my ability to perform the work of the position AND six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 grade level which includes a familiarity with recreational programs of summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). One full year of specialized experience meets the requirement for both general and specialized experience.
Education: Successful completion of two (2) years of education above the high school level that included 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.)
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.
Mandatory requirement for proof of three (3) types of certification prior to employment as a lifeguard:
- A current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures
- A current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification
- A current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification, which includes adult, child, and infant procedures.
- A current and valid Water Safety Instructor certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience.
Knowledge of a varieity of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor.
Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.
Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally.PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child and infant procedures.
Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.
Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment
If position is identified as having "regular contact with children" (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.
Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required.
May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
May provide advice and guidance (e.g., orientation, lesson plans, etc.) to lower grade lifeguardsYou must be a student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university:Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an approved program
Pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree (Junior/Senior only), Graduate or Professional Degree
Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
Have a good academic standing (no less than 2.95 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale)
A U.S. citizen or a national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island).
