Job Description


This position is located in the aircraft maintenance functional area.  The primary purpose of the position is to perform work incidental and/or preparatory to that of a higher graded mechanic in the repair and maintenance of aircraft.  Works with and assists journeyman Aircraft Mechanics in the repair and maintenance of aircraft.  Assists journeyman Mechanics in the removal, repair, overhaul, modification and installation or replacement of the airframe, jet or piston engines, major subassemblies, components and systems such as flight, fuel, oil, vacuum, hydraulic, electrical propeller or rotor assemblies.  Washes, cleans, and lubricates aircraft and components, using prescribed solvents, cleaning materials, oils, and other materials to prevent corrosion.  Assists in the removal, maintenance and installation of ejection seats, canopies and pylon tanks.  Complies with safety, fire security and housekeeping regulations.  Insure that material and equipment are properly and safely stored, protected, and maintained.   Prepares for and participates in various types of readiness evaluation such as ORI, IG, and UE inspections, mobility, and command support exercise.  May be required to perform such additional duties as structural fire fighting, aircraft fire/crash/rescue duty, security guard, snow removal, munitions loading and handling, heavy equipment operation, maintenance of facilities and equipment, or serve as a member of a team to cope with natural disasters or civil emergencies.  May be required to travel in military aircraft and drive military vehicles.  May be required to participate in various periods of temporary duty away from place of assignment.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: Selected candidates will be required to be in a compatible military grade and assignment prior to the effective date of placement.

1.  Knowledge of hand tools to make mechanical repairs. 

2.  Experience removing and installing aircraft parts, components and accessories with detailed guidance.

3.  Experience in following detailed instructions in making routine, reoccurring repairs and modifications to aircraft parts, subassemblies and components, e.g. such as jacking and leveling aircraft, installing and adjusting engines, landing gear assemblies, instrument panels, and flight control systems.

4.  Experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification.  

5.  Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow.

WG-10 requires 18 months of specialized experience.

WG-08 requires 12 months of specialized experience.

WG-05 requires 6 months of specialized experience.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.

Medical screening will be completed upon selection for hire. 

Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is not authorized.

Airman who accept a technician position will be terminated from the Bonus and Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP).

Indefinite positions may be converted to permanent status without further competition.
