GS-12: Two (2) years of professional dentistry experience and/or training; or superior academic ability defined as that demonstrated by an intern, who on the basis of an evaluation of all interns who have completed training in the same hospital or in the same kind of internship program over the past 5 years, would fall into the upper half of the group, and at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GP-11 grade level in the Federal service regularly encountering, diagnosing, and administering treatment for dental diseases and dental health problems of greater-than-usual difficulty; and dealing with dental health cases presenting patient-behavior and communication problems; removing un-erupted and impacted teeth, residual root tips, and teeth with exposed roots; removing localized foreign bodies from the gingival tissues and alveolar sockets; performing prosthetic work involving complicating conditions; applying corrective treatment in cases of abnormal formation where proper occlusion is difficult to attain; performing root canal therapy on the anterior teeth of both children and adults; treating cases of rampant caries in children; treating acute cases of cellulitis associated with dental pathology; treating diseases of salivary glands and their ducts; and performing muco-gingival surgery.
GS-13: Three (3) years of professional dentistry experience and/or training equivalent to at least that of a Board eligible and at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GP-12 grade level in the Federal service which includes extensive, advanced professional knowledge and a high order of diagnostic and dental skills in a specialized area of dental practice; thorough understanding of the relationships and applications of the basic sciences which include(anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, embryology; microbiology, pharmacology, and pathology) underlying dentistry to the dental health problems associated with specialized area of practice; and skills in handling patients with special behavioral problems and in dealing with patient-management problems.
GS-14: One (1) year of professional dentistry experience equivalent to at least the GP-13 grade level in the Federal service which includes knowledge and understanding in great depth of the relationships and applications of the basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, embryology; microbiology, pharmacology, and pathology) underlying dentistry to the dental health problems associated with the specialty; a very highly developed diagnostic skill (derived from both a deep understanding of scientific phenomena involved and extensive case experience); an expert treatment planning ability with respect to the specialty; and considerable skill in administering treatment. (For specialist positions, certifications as diplomat by a national certifying board for a specialized area of practice meets the requirements.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of dental science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and technique of restorative dentistry and dental materials.
2. Knowledge of dental principles such as periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery and prosthodontics.
3. Knowledge of medical diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease as they relate to the care and treatment of oral cavity.
4. Skill and dexterity in manipulating a variety of instruments while performing specialized dental procedures.
5. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
