Job Description

Duties

·        Plans, organizes, and implements a well-rounded swimming program.  Organizes, coordinates, promotes schedules, develops lesson plans, and conducts swimming meets, special events and daily activities to address differing needs of active duty military, dependents, and civilian personnel.

·        Oversees day-to-day operation of swimming facility.  Observes and enforces safety rules and regulations. 

·        Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries.  Uses a variety of techniques such as artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and first aid. 

·        Oversees general housekeeping of swimming facility.  Ensures that facility appearance is maintained and that building and grounds are in proper repair. 

·        Performs gate control and administrative duties.  Obtains, accounts for, safeguards change fund, time cards, and deposits.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.  Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. 

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  Six months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or experience monitoring activities in a swimming facility and performing CPR and First Aid.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Six months of specialized experience in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the position of Recreation Assistant. Specialized experience is experience gained while performing work that included (1) Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) Teachers aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) Aid or assistant in the organization and dministration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); (6) Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; (7) Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; (8) Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.

 

OR

EDUCATION: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.).

IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ABOVE APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW:

Applicants must submit the following certificates at the time of application (a) a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures and (b) a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification and (c) a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child and infant procedures and (d) a current and valid nationally recognized water safety instructor certification. FAILURE TO SUBMIT THESE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Your qualification will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience.

2. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor.

3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ARE YOU USING YOUR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY? You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims.  Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. 

 

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.  It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: ·         Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures.  ·        Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized water safety instructor certification. ·        Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification. ·        Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures. ·        Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills. ·        Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position.  All certifications must remain current during the period of employment. ·        If position is identified as having œregular contact with children (e.g., youth swim lesson instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed. ·        Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue.  ·        Must be able to lift and carry 30 pounds and over.  ·        Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical before entrance on duty, unless otherwise exempt. ·        Work conditions involve sitting, standing or walking however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling or reaching is required. ·        May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. ·        May provide advice and guidance (e.g., orientation, lesson plans, etc.) to lower lifeguards.
