Duties

  • Serves as technical specialist, providing expert engineering authority and consulting capabilities in the areas of materials selection and/or evaluation.
  • Provides technical direction and guidance for programs involving weapons systems design, development, test, and production.
  • Serves as expert advisor on integration of technical aspects of system and subsystem performance with other specialty, systems engineering, and quality program requirements.
  • Visits field activities or contractor facilities, acting as troubleshooter, to investigate problems such as unacceptable subsystem performance.
  • Conduct evaluations of weapon systems material properties, of significant technological breakthrough on systems, and select the best approach from competing approaches to achieve increased system performance and manufacturing east and compliance with environment standards.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
FOR GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal Service or equivalent in other pay systems that includes knowledge of basic principles, concepts, and methodology used in Materials Engineering
OR
have one year of graduate level education
OR
superior academic achievement SAA,
OR
have a combination of education and specialized experience.

FOR GS-09: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service or equivalent in other pay systems that includes professional knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methodology used in Materials Engineering, and ability to gather and analyze basic facts and draw conclusions,
OR
have a masters or equivalent graduate degree
OR
2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree which provides you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position
OR
have a combination of education and specialized experience.

FOR GS-11: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service, which includes professional knowledge of material engineering principles and concepts, and the ability to apply the full range of engineering practices, methods, and tecniques in the performance of a wide range of materials engineering assignments and knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques to develop, simulate and analyze data,
OR
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. ,
OR
equivalent doctoral degree
OR
have a combination of education and specialized experience.

FOR GS-12: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Applying experience in research projects to materials problems affecting the reliability of military components and electronic systems, to include operation and data collection/interpretation using sophisticated analytical electronic materials analysis equipment. Participating with project engineers during conceptual validation, full scale development and production in materials selection and/or evaluation to assure that the desired properties and costs are commensurate with the required functions. Reviewing drawings and specification to assure processes and procedures are adequate, accurate and will give the desired results.

FOR GS-13: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Technical specialist to include application of knowledge and expertise from materials engineering disciplines including corrosion resistance, fatigue, metallurgical test data evaluation, review of drawings and specifications, design reviews, storage life evaluations, and process reviews. Identify where the application of specialized ordnance and missile technology could be introduced for maximum, long term impact on system performance. Expert advisor on integration of technical aspects of system and subsystem performance with other specialty, systems engineering, and quality program requirements. Technical recommendations are considered authoritative and have far reaching effects on the overall Air Force mission.

FOR GS-14: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: Technical specialist to include application of knowledge and expertise from materials engineering disciplines including corrosion resistance, fatigue, metallurgical test data evaluation, review of drawings and specifications, design reviews, storage life evaluations, and process reviews. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Professional knowledge of general engineering principals as required to support research.
2. Broad working knowledge and experience in electromagnetic modeling, analytical and experimental investigations in antennas, and microwave circuitry.
3. Ability to analyze, interpret and apply materials engineering rules and procedures in a variety of situations and recommend effective solutions to senior engineers.
4. Knowledge of computer operations and standard software applications.
5. Skill in applying basic principles, concepts, and practices of the occupation sufficient to perform research and analyses assignment in Material Engineering.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social).
