Duties

MILITARY GRADE REQUIREMENT: Enlisted, Not to Exceed SSgt/E-5

NOMINATING OFFICIAL:  MSgt Francisco Velasquez, Sheet Metal Mechanic Supervisor

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS: This is an Excepted (Dual Status Military Technician) position that requires active membership in a compatible skill in the Arkansas Air National Guard. Selectee must be a member of the Arkansas Air National Guard and be assigned to the 189th AW in a compatible military position in Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC) 2A7X3. Must become compatible in the AFSC within 12 months of appointment. Must possess or be able to obtain a Secret Security Clearance. Technicians will not be militarily senior to their full-time supervisor or wage leader (Grade Inversion). Selectee may be subject to uncommon duties, rotational shift assignments and overtime duties. Enlisted members currently at a higher grade than allowed by the position (see Military Grade Requirement above) may apply; however, they must administratively reduce prior to appointment and provide confirmation of the reduction to HRO.

SPECIALIZED QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Must have 18 months of the following:

Experience in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams.

Experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment.

Experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys.

Experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments.

PLACEMENT FACTORS:  Applicants should demonstrate through prior experience the following: (1) Skill to perform inspection procedures to include aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment work and daily shop operations. (2) Knowledge of metal working equipment and tools of the trade. (3) Ability to repair, modify and install honeycomb, phenolic and Plexiglas components on aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment. (4) Knowledge of corrosion control and ability to treat and protect surfaces and components. (5) Ability to read and follow blueprints, schematics, drawings and technical orders in repair and/or modification of aircraft and/or aircraft support equipment. (6) Completion of appropriate technical school/Career Development Courses (CDCs).

DUTIES: The selectee independently inspects aircraft and determines the nature and extent of repairs to be made, using applicable technical orders as guidelines.  Repairs cracks in aircraft skin.  Fabricates and fits patches to damages areas, determining repair detail necessary to retain or restore original strength.  Troubleshoots aircraft structural repair situations in such areas as fuselage, tails, wings, cowlings, and stabilizers.  Aligns and balances component structures and airframe using precision measuring instruments and levels.  Inspects damage or deterioration and determines repair or replacement of plastic, fiberglass, composites, bonded structures, and bonded honeycomb assemblies using powered and non-powered tools and equipment.  May assist in training of drill status guard members and in maintenance of publication files of applicable technical orders, regulations, manuals and local directives.  Prepares for and participates in various types of readiness evaluations such as Operational Readiness Inspections (ORIs), Inspector General (IG) Inspections, Unit Compliance Inspections (UCIs), and mobility and command support exercises.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Other Information

This position with the Arkansas National Guard is a Title 32 USC 709 position, not Title 5, and as such has different Reduction In Force (RIF) criteria, certain grade and promotion limitations, and no Veterans Preference. Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer of Civilian Pay is required as a condition of employment/promotion/reassignment. Initial in-processing of new employees will include enrollment procedures. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is not authorized.
