Job Description

Duties

As a Recreation Aid (Lifeguard), GS-0189-02 you will serve as a lifeguard and perform other related swimming facility duties.  You will also:
-Monitor activities within assigned swimming areas.
-Rescue and resuscitate individuals in danger of drowning and render first aid to injuries.
-Assist in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility and perform gate control duties.
-Assists water safety instructor in conducting swimming lessons.
-Participate in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, to administer basic first aid and CPR.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  3 months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position.
OR EDUCATIONAL SUBSTITUTION:  Successful completion of High School graduation or equivalent.  NOTE:  YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION OR EQUIVALENT IF USING EDUCATION TO SUBSTITUTE FOR GENERAL EXPERIENCE.
OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.   NOTE:  YOU MUST PROVIDE PROOF OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION OR EQUIVALENT IF USING EDUCATION TO SUBSTITUTE FOR GENERAL EXPERIENCE.
AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  Candidates must currently possess all of the following certifications.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  YOU MUST SUBMIT A PHOTOCOPY OF ALL YOUR CURRENT CERTIFICATIONS WITH YOUR APPLICATION PACKAGE.
A.  Current AMERICAN RED CROSS LIFEGUARD CARD, and/or Current WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTION (WSI) CARD OR ELLIS AND ASSOCIATES NATIONAL POOL AND WATERPARK LIFEGUARD TRAINING PROGRAM CARD TO MEET THE NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR LIFESAVING AND WATER RESCUE.
B.  Current CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) CARD (adult, child and infant procedures).
C.  Current nationally recognized BASIC FIRST AID CERTIFICATION.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, but you must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas as reported on your résumé

1. Basic knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR, as would be learned through an approved course leading to certification.
2. Limited knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks.
3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally.
4. Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.

ARE YOU USING YOUR EDUCATION TO QUALIFY? You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Unofficial transcripts on college letterhead are acceptable, and must display major field of study and date degree conferred. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Applicants can verify accreditation here.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value. DRUG TESTING: THIS POSITION HAS BEEN DESIGNATED FOR DRUG TESTING. IF YOU ARE SELECTED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO URINALYSIS TESTING PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT AND YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO RANDOM URINALYSIS TESTING AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT.

1. Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills.
2. Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position. All certifications must remain current during the period of employment.
3. If position is identified as having "regular contact with children" (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed.
4. May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
5.  **Applicant are required to lift and carry 45 pounds and over.  This position requires a weight lifting aptitude test.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate level security clearance as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over with assistance. Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required.  A physical may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors.  Involves long periods of exposure to summer sun and chlorinated water.
