Unit Coordinator (Part-Time)

Under the direction of the Director and Assistant Director, Surgery Center, is responsible for the organization, receptionist, and secretarial duties of the Surgery Center, (Operating Room, Floor, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)). Performs supplemental nurses aid duties as necessary. Assists Director and Assistant Director with special projects as assigned.

Part Time: Monday - Friday; 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM


  • Performs receptionist duties including answering questions as needed, directing visitors and patients' family members; assists physicians and other hospital personnel with locating patients, and charts. Follows appropriate lines of authority when communicating information. Answers incoming phone calls; responds to callers' needs or refers to appropriate person/department.
  • Performs administrative duties:
  • Responsible for ordering in the Galley the appropriate supplies, maintaining orderliness, and recording daily temperature for refrigerator/freezer. Maintains a working relationship with BTNRH Dietary Specialist.
  • In collaboration with nursing staff, assists with chart preparation.
  • Performs preparation for the next surgical day to include: pulling patient gown in the assigned room, may write out the surgical board for the next day.
  • Responsible for scanning identified portions of patient chart.
  • Discharges patient from SIS & Nextgen Financials.
  • Assists in coordination of BTNRH ancillary departments for patient cares.
  • Responsible for making follow-up appointments for patients.
  • Generates discharge instructions.
  • Assists with ingoing and outgoing mail.
  • Responsible/coordinates for maintenance and repairs of Nurse's Station equipment (i.e. copier, fax, etc).
  • Orders office supplies under direction of the Director.
  • Under the direction of Nursing Staff posts results of labDAQ/Next Gen.
  • Performs Nurse's aid duties to include but not limited to: obtain or transport items as requested from nursing staff, specimen collection & labeling, nutritional needs. Assists in performing routine patient care (feeding, bathing, ambulation, bed making). Assists in Recovery Room: provides psychosocial age-appropriate support of inpatients; may physically hold/steady patients.
  • Contacts physician office to obtain any required document for the patient, if necessary.
  • Assists Director and/or Assistant Director with special projects and/or meetings.
  • Helps coordinate patient transfers.
  • Maintains resource books with current and accurate phone numbers.
  • Organizes nursing station to increase efficiency.
  • Acts as liaison between all departments and specialties.
  • Facilitates medical record corrections for healthcare staff.
  • Maintains "The Joint Commission" standards on an ongoing basis, and assists in unit responsibilities for readiness for Joint Commission visits.
  • Participates in department performance improvement activities.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in dealing with sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain a satisfactory and harmonious working relationship with all levels of staff, public, other consumers in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to apply strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate personal and patient/network computer systems, office, and patient care equipment.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of general Departmental, FFBH and BTNRH policies and administrative procedures.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of medical records, charts and medical terminology.
  • Ability to handle stress of multi-tasking in high volume situations.
  • Ability to work or be on call for non-scheduled hours.
  • Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.


  • High school diploma or equivalent, required.
  • One year of Nursing Aide and/or Unit Secretary experience preferred.
  • Nurses aide course to be taken within first year of Boys Town employment.
  • Minimum of five years experience in different aspects of clinical/hospital operations, appointments/admissions or medical records, preferred.
  • Must type 35 wpm and have experience with order entry/network computer system0
  • Must be CPR (BLS) certified.
