GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Associate Director of the Center for Childhood Deafness, Language, and Learning (CCDLL), the Patient Access Specialist is responsible for serving as a patient advocate and resource through the scheduling, pre-registration, registration and authorization process. Expectations of job include greeting and checking in families, as well as other customers in a professional manner while working to exceed customer service expectations, pre-registering current and prospective patients which includes: obtaining insurance information, verification of eligibility & benefits, identifying out of pocket liability, identifying and obtaining necessary pre-determination and/or pre-certification/authorization of clinical services performed at the Cochlear Implant and Speech Language Pathology Offices, making referrals to Patient Financial Counselor for self-pay or inability to pay, and communicating out of pocket liabilities to patients while attempting to collect in advance or at time of service, and arranging acceptable payment plans when necessary.  

 

REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • A minimum of three years of experience working in a clinic and/or billing environment, preferably focused on registration, coding (ICD-10, CPT, HCPC) and preauthorization, preferred
  • Knowledge of insurance terms and reimbursement procedures
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Knowledge of Explanation of Benefits (EOB), preferred
  •  Requires a high level of computer proficiency in a variety of software applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Excellent telephone etiquette
  • Ability to maintain appropriate level of confidentiality
