Position Summary

Perform technical aspects of medication preparation under the direct and indirect supervision of a pharmacist.  Medication preparation and other tasks are subject to sequential or final verification by an RN or pharmacist, under the facility supervision of a physician. Will assist in preparation and distribution of oral chemotherapy medications.  Order investigational medication, receive investigational medication, transport investigational medication, and document drug accountability.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily medicationbased upon nurse approved physician orders
  • Ensure accurate and proper patient identification, drug, dose and diluent.
  • Perform pharmaceutical math as required for accurate admixtures.
  • Will perform all aspects associated with parenteral admixture preparation including washing,  donning personal protective equipment, admixture hood cleaning and preparation, the use of aseptic technique per industry standard procedures and proper disposal of hazardous wastes.
  • Perform all aspects of inventory control, including regularly scheduled inventory counts, daily ordering as needed and within department guidelines, drug expiration date monitoring, restocking, and running inventory reports as needed.
  • Routinely will perform whole pharmacy cleaning duties per department schedules and standards.
  • Will work in an independent environment, requiring proactively communication of any concerns, problems or questions to the pharmacy director or pharmacist.
  • Will adhere to all procedural policies to ensure department standards, safety and efficiency.
  • Manage pharmacy component of patient assistance medication programs and stocking.
  • Perform quality checks to ensure accurate and timely billing.

 Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.  Certified Pharmacy Technician or completion of State Pharmacy Board registration required.  Pharmacy experience is required, with experience in an oncology pharmacy with I.V. preparation and/or chemotherapy mixing preferred.   Completion of an ASHOP accredited program or community college based program highly desirable. Experience in research also preferred.  Excellent mathematical skills, including understanding of metrics needed.
