Pharmacy IV Technician Lead - Omaha (FT Days, 40 hrs)

JOB OVERVIEW:
This position functions under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager/or Pharmacy Operations Supervisor and with authentication by Registered Pharmacists to execute the general overall operations of the department and system. This is a multi-faceted role, requiring a complete understanding of departmental and system work functions associated with drug procurement, distribution, compounding, intravenous admixture, and computerized services. Complete, thorough understanding of and current experience implementing sterile compounding practices defined in USP 797 is required. Primarily responsible for execution and maintenance of all IV room processes including cleaning procedures, inventory control, and daily IV admixture and TPN compounding. Under the supervision of staff pharmacists, performs all technical functions required for packaging, labeling, charging, preparing, compounding, computer input and delivering of medications and intravenous fluids according to established operational definitions of the department and facility, based on requirements of the Nebraska Board of Pharmacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Compile and document patient data to assist with billing procedures and the updating of medication administration records and databases.
  • Compile patient data to ensure departmental compliance with state and federal regulations in the day-to-day activities of the department, including clerical maintenance of patient profiles and records, and compilation of patient monitoring criteria to assist in assuring safe medication delivery.
  • Compile and compare data to assist with inventory maintenance including daily inventory re-order functions and fiscal year-end inventory process.
  • Communicate respectfully and with compassion to patients, staff, students and the public.
  • Communicate to patients, staff, students, public via telephone calls/messages, referring calls/messages to appropriate person(s) with accuracy and timeliness. Perform problem-solving concerning telephone calls via prioritization with appropriate follow-up.
  • Promote and model the practices of sterile compounding defined in USP 797.
  • Communicate (speak) to patients and/or their families making verbal offer of counseling on behalf of the pharmacist, if applicable.
  • Promote the role of pharmacy as a necessary and contributing member of the health care team through representation of the department in a prestigious and professional manner.
  • Follow instruction from supervisor to perform other functions as assigned in order to achieve the goals within the department.
  • Set up and operate equipment pertinent to the aseptic admixture of intravenous preparations (large volume IVs with additives, piggybacks, TPN solutions) including the laminar flow hood and biological safety cabinet.  Primarily responsible for admixture of all IVs
  • Set up and operate departmental office equipment, including calculator, fax machine, personal computer and printer.
  • Set up medication as prescribed by physician utilizing packaging system specific to each nursing area.  This process may involve clerical interpretation of physician order, ability to calculate by ratio or proportion and knowledge of metric/standard measurement conversions.
  • Handle inventory insuring accurate, timely dispensing of medications as prescribed by physician.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: High School graduate or equivalent
  • Licensure: Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Technician. CPHT Certification is required
  • Experience: One year experience in hospital pharmacy setting. Current experience with IV admixture in hospital setting required, with experience in unit dose system and computer applications
    OR
  • One year experience in retail pharmacy setting with successful completion of standardized departmental IV admixture training or demonstrated proficiency required, with experience in unit dose system and computer applications.
