JOB OVERVIEW
 
Assists in the production and coordination of the staffing process to provide nursing to all patient care areas 24 hours a day within established guidelines. Must be competent in knowing, understanding and articulating staffing policies and processes.  Daily adjusts staffing as changes occur in fluctuating census, staff absences and employee turnover.  Will document absences of attendance and report absences to managers.  Assists in orienting the scheduling process to newly hired nursing employees.  Assists other hospital systems when staff shortage occurs. Flexibility in work hours and conditions to work with staff on all shifts.  Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
(INFORMATION)       

  1. By the means of a centralized process will develop and analyze master work schedules to provide nursing to all patient care areas 24 hours a day and to provide staff with work schedules that negotiate and incorporate employee preference whenever possible.  
  2. Document all scheduling changes of staff on master computer work schedules and informs units of all absences in order to maintain accurate records of worked hours to assist in monitoring attendance, payroll processing and for ease of areas to make timely patient assignments. 
  3. Per census adjust daily staffing coverage to provide ideal patient care as defined in established budgeted guidelines.
  4. Will record information related to hours worked by supplemental agency nursing to maintain accurate record of expenses for monitoring.
  5. Assist in coordination of API training (Time and attendance, Staff Scheduling)
  6. Collect quality assurance data, analyze data and implement improvement plans as assigned by leadership.
 
(PEOPLE) 
  1. Negotiate and encourage nursing to adjust their work schedules as census changes and as staff turnover occurs to work additional shifts, alter hours/shifts or reduce work schedules.
  2. Rearrange nursing work schedules to accommodate special needs of employees, such as funeral leave, FMLA or emergencies. 
  3. Assist with coordination of external nursing agencies for supplemental nursing to ensure adequate nursing coverage to all patient care areas 24 hours a day. 
  4. Instruct and orient new employees on staffing operational definitions and work schedules in Patient Care â?? Nursing.
  5. Follow instruction from supervisor to perform other processes and tasks as assigned in order to achieve goals and make process improvements. 
  6. Must perceive customer relations as a primary focus, and continually strive to satisfy the needs of every customer in all areas of the work force.
 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
           
Sedentary work with occasional heavy work required when setting up classroom and work with students in clinical areas/classroom. Occasional lifting up to 35 pounds may be necessary.   Reaches in various directions to grasp and handle materials.  Operates personal computer frequently.  Work is conducted indoors with occasional requirement to walk outdoors (between buildings) to assess other departments.  Occasional occupational exposure to chemical/biological, infectious materials.  May be exposed to biohazardous materials
           
 
QUALIFICATIONS (Education/training and/or Experience)
           
Must possess current Nebraska R.N. licensure.  Two years of recent experience in a health care facility with practice in rehabilitation and/or staff scheduling preferred.  Must possess knowledge of current nursing practices and skills.  Must demonstrate strong leadership, organizational and teaching skills.  Good organizational skills and people skills for problem solving essential. Must be self-motivated and have excellent proven communication skills. Requires work schedule flexibility in order to meet the needs of the department and facility.
