I.   DEPARTMENT FUNCTION/JOB OVERVIEW

Under broad direction from the Therapeutic Educational Coordinator, provides group and individual academic instruction for individuals with neurological injuries/illnesses. Plans and executes age appropriate social and educational activities, ensuring a safe, positive environment which promotes peer interaction. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility.

II.  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

     (INFORMATION)

1. Compile, analyze and record patient information to manage academic education of patients while they are at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.  Provides the Therapeutic Educational Coordinator with information necessary to report accountability of services.
2. Plan, direct and implement academic education and rehabilitative programs.
3. Participate in planning and implementation of habilitative and rehabilitative programs.

     (PEOPLE)

1. Provides individual and group academic instruction on various subjects.
2. Educate patient and family on compensatory strategies to facilitate improved learning.
3. Plan and facilitate group activities to promote appropriate social skills, peer interaction, and group behavior.
4. Communicates key information to the family and to other staff involved in the patientâ??s care to ensure reinforcement and continuity of care.
5. Communicates with supervisor or other staff regarding concerns, goals, etc., to insure quality of service delivery.
6. Perceives customer relations as a primary focus.  Continually strives to satisfy the needs of both internal and external customers.
7. Takes instruction from supervisor to perform other functions as assigned in order to achieve the goals within the department and/or system.

     (THINGS)

1. Operate computer to run treatment programs for patients and to complete documentation.
2. Operate audiovisual equipment for clinical use.
3. Maintain and assure a safe environment.  Handle and operate all necessary equipment and perform required duties according to established safety standards to maintain compliance with regulations and prevent injuries.

            NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Transport patients to and from the nursing unit or therapies via wheelchair.
2. Assist patients with toileting as needed and within scope of training.

III.  PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Inside - not exposed to outside elements or hazards.  Reaching, handling, fingering, talking, hearing and seeing is required.  Sedentary work.  Lifting and/or carrying 10-25 pounds occasionally.  Occasionally push wheelchairs with up to 300 pounds up and down ramp.  Routinely exposed to biohazardous materials.  Requires sufficient sight to see and read reports and computer screen.  Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person.

IV.  QUALIFICATIONS (Education/training and/or Experience)

Minimum bachelors degree in education.  Completion of class work and/or experience in special education preferred.  Minimum 3 years teaching experience preferred.  Experience working with people who have acquired neurological injuries preferred.

CPR for Health Care Provider/CPR for Professional Rescuer required at time of hire or within 30 days from date of hire.
