DEPARTMENT FUNCTION/JOB OVERVIEW
This position functions under the direct supervision of the Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacy Operations Supervisor and in collaboration with Staff Pharmacists to execute the general overall operations of the department and system. This is a multi-faceted, demanding role, requiring a complete understanding of departmental and system work functions associated with drug procurement, distribution, compounding, intravenous admixture, and computerized services. With collaboration, mentorship, and guidance of registered pharmacists, performs all technical functions required for packaging, labeling, charging, preparing, compounding, computer input and delivering of medications and intravenous fluids according to established operational definitions of the department and facility, based on requirements of the Nebraska Board of Pharmacy. This position is responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for the department and Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department, system and facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 
  (INFORMATION)
 

1. Compile and document patient data to assist with billing procedures and the updating of medication administration records and databases.
2. Compile patient data to insure departmental compliance with state and federal regulations in the day-to-day activities of the department, including clerical maintenance of patient profiles and records, and compilation of patient monitoring criteria to assist in assuring safe medication delivery.
3. Compile and compare data to assist with inventory maintenance including daily inventory re-order functions and fiscal year-end inventory process.

1. Communicate (speak) respectfully and with compassion to patients, staff, students and the public.
2. Communicate (speak) to patients, staff, students, public via telephone calls/messages, referring calls/messages to appropriate person(s) with accuracy and timeliness. Perform problem-solving concerning telephone calls via prioritization with appropriate follow-up.
3. Communicate (speak) to patients and/or their families making verbal offer of counseling on behalf of the pharmacist, if applicable.
4. Promote the role of pharmacy as a necessary and contributing member of the health care team through representation of the department in a prestigious and professional manner.
5. Take instruction from supervisor to perform other functions as assigned in order to achieve the goals within the department.

   (THINGS)
 

1. Set up and operate equipment pertinent to the aseptic admixture of intravenous preparations (large volume IV's with additives, piggybacks, TPN solutions) including the laminar flow hood and biological safety cabinet.
2. Set up and operate departmental office equipment, including calculator, fax machine, personal computer and printer.
3. Set up medication as prescribed by the licensed independent practitioner utilizing packaging system specific to each nursing area.  This process may involve clerical interpretation of physician order, ability to calculate by ratio or proportion and knowledge of metric/standard measurement conversions.
4. Handle inventory insuring accurate, timely dispensing of medications as prescribed by physician.
5. Handle inventory through delivery of filled medication orders/prescriptions to nursing areas with retrieval of information concerning licensed independent practitioner orders and refill requests from nursing areas.
6. Handle inventory through delivery, exchange and retrieval of maintenance unit dose fill to and from nursing area according to cycle specific to the area.
7. Handle inventory through the use of Automated Dispensing Machines.
8. Handle inventory insuring proper storage and placement on shelves on nursing units of stock pharmacy items.
9. Maintain and assure a safe environment for the department.  Handle and operate all necessary equipment and perform required duties according to established safety standards to maintain compliance with regulations and prevent injury.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Light work - occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds. Walking or standing to a significant degree. Ability to constantly move from standing, sitting and vice versa to fill orders, make deliveries through facility. Ability to handle assembling and puncturing of IV's, large volume IV's, IVPB's, TPN's and compounding of such. Ability to handle kneeling, crouching, stooping, reaching when retrieving, filling, delivering and preparing medications.  Ability to operate, handle and functionally perform the computer operations.
 
Indoor work - not exposed to outside elements. There is occasional potential for exposure to chemical/biological materials requiring special handling (handling chemotherapeutic medications and other chemicals).  Requires sufficient sight to see and read reports and computer screen. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person.
 
QUALIFICATIONS (Education/training and/or Experience)
 
Education: High School graduate or equivalent
Licensure: Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Technician or eligible for immediate registration prior to start date. CPHT Certification required, or must obtain within 1 year from the date of Pharmacy Technician registration from the State of Nebraska. Successful completion of standardized departmental IV admixture training or demonstrated proficiency required.         Currently enrolled in an ACPE (Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education) accredited School of Pharmacy in a Doctor of Pharmacy program.
Licensure: Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Intern or eligible for immediate registration prior to start date.
 
Experience: One year experience in hospital pharmacy setting with experience in IV admixture, unit dose system, and computer applications preferred, but not required.

Required Licenses and Certifications include: Certified Pharmacy Technician OR Pharmacist Intern OR Pharmacy Technician.
