This position will be based at a 115 acre campus located on the southern edge of Council Bluffs, Iowa.  The Iowa School for the Deaf and Iowa Braille School (Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired) provide educational services to Deaf and Blind students throughout the state of Iowa.

Primary Function: 


Under general direction of the Director of Business Operations, responsible for supporting the areas of computer operations, computer repair, user and desktop support (hardware and software), helpdesk and data management. Performs a variety of information technology support duties to ensure smooth delivery of technology services. Monitors, operates, coordinates, assists and trains others in the operation of computer hardware, software, and peripherals. Utilizes computer equipment, software and diagnostic tools to perform a broad range of assistance. Updates supervisor on status of projects and technical issues. Exercises judgment in selecting and applying procedures correctly, and determines when to refer problems to the supervisor or the next level of support. May provide information and training to students, staff, faculty, or general public on established policies and procedures, or services provided. Serves as backup and maintenance support of computer network operations.


Typical Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provides technical support in the use of personal computer hardware and software.
  • Sets up and configures desktop computers, peripherals and accounts.
  • Installs software and installs and repairs hardware and peripherals.
  • Troubleshoots, diagnoses problems, implements corrective action procedures and/or escalates to other technical resources as appropriate.
  • Maintains, updates or creates systems, databases and web pages using front-end user-enhanced web tools within prescribed guidelines.
  • Administers user accounts.
  • Designs and produces moderately complex reports.
  • Researches and recommends system and equipment upgrades.
  • Manages equipment inventory.
  • Troubleshoots and tests personal computers and peripherals on a network to diagnose hardware versus software problems.
  • Develops and tests user documentation.
  • Works with hardware vendors to resolve equipment failures and problems.
  • Assists with routine security checks on the system and file rights management.
  • Assists with backup, maintenance and disaster recovery operations.
  • Assists with complex technical projects.
  • Contributes to agency goals by accomplishing related duties as required.

Minimum qualifications:


A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field.   Experience (typically 1-3 years) in providing customer service in a technological environment with a variety of hardware, software, programming languages and operating systems. Knowledge of network protocols. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may also serve to meet this minimum requirement.


Ability to reach the level of sign language proficiency designated for the position within the time frame established by the Schools Sign Language Communication Policy.


Applicant must have satisfactory criminal history; sex offenders registry; and child and adult abuse registry background checks before hire.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 


Knowledge and experience in programming applicable to the assignment.


Skill in analyzing systems and program specifications.


Demonstrated ability to translate functional specifications into program code.


Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.


Basic understanding of operating systems, hardware configurations, and software.


Ability to independently install and troubleshoot local software applications, hardware, and peripherals at the desktop level.


Ability to learn new software applications.  Skill in providing customer service.

Salary and Benefits:  Pay range: $22.52 - $32.98/hr.  Full Benefits are available.
