Shelter Staff (part-time)

Overview:

Catholic Charities Emergency Family Shelter provides emergency shelter and food to people experiencing homelessness. More than just a place of protection, it is also a source of hope and support, helping to prevent people from becoming or remaining homeless. Located in Des Moines, Iowa, The Emergency Family Shelter has been helping people since 1990. We are a team of committed, passionate, problem solvers who support each other and work together as a team.

Job Summary:

Our part-time shelter staff is responsible for the direct care of the clients who use the Emergency Shelter services and maintaining accurate, timely data records. These services include providing a safe, secure environment for individuals and families while they work toward gaining self-sufficiency.  Available shifts:

• 5 pm to 10 pm Friday and Saturday
• Overnights (non-sleeping) 10 pm to 8 am every other Saturday and Sunday
• Holidays and other shifts as needed

Responsibilities:

• Document shelter activities and incidents through the shelter log, client files, and incident reports.
• Supervise Shelter activities and individuals during day-to-day activities.
• Maintain and regulate the facility to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
• Assist with food preparation and service as needed.
• Enforce shelter policies and procedures.
• Inform and advising the Shelter Coordinator, or on-call personnel, of problematic areas promptly and efficiently.
• Manage client records and files to ensure accuracy and confidentiality.
• Intervene and appropriately de-escalate crises as needed.
• Answer phone, take messages and follow all confidentiality procedures.
• Provide services to residents, including but not limited to providing personal care items, cleaning supplies, and linens.
• Clean and sanitize rooms and public areas.
• Attend scheduled meetings and training opportunities.
• Train, supervise, and provide ongoing support and guidance for volunteers as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

Qualifications:

Individuals must be confident and have an assertive manner; establish and set professional boundaries, must have the ability to work with homeless individuals professionally and compassionately. Must be dependable and demonstrate honesty and integrity while working independently without direct supervision and must have the ability to work in a team atmosphere. Demonstrate commitment to our mission and vision. Individuals must be able to pass background and child abuse registry checks.

Education:

High School diploma or general education degree (GRD); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge or willingness to attend training in mental health, crisis intervention, and CPR/First Aid/Mandatory Reporter.

Physical Demands/ Work Environment:

This Position is required to do light to moderate physical work. To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the individual is regularly required to stand, walk for some periods, use hands and fingers, communicate, move, frequently required to position self to stoop, kneel or crouch, reach with and use arms and hands as required in using standard office equipment and a PC. Individuals must be able to frequently lift up to twenty-five pounds. Specific vision abilities by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. The work environment for this position is a residential environment with a moderate to loud noise level. Work schedules may vary to including weekends, holidays, and possibly other shifts as needed.
