Position Summary:

To oversee the proper functioning and operations of the Emergency Family Shelter, under the direction of the Shelter Coordinator. Shelter staff is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the shelter while providing a safe and secure environment for the families we serve while maintaining accurate, timely data records. The day-to-day operations include cleanliness of the facility, assisting families as needed, documenting throughout your shift. 

We are currently hiring for the following shifts

  • Part-time weekends:  Friday – Sunday 5pm – 10pm including  holidays
  • PRN (as needed):  Overnights including holidays.  Non sleeping position
  • Full-time: Tuesday - Saturday 3pm – 10pm 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Document shelter activities and incidents throughout the shift.
  • Maintain and regulate the facility to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
  • Assist with food preparation and service as needed.
  • Inform and advise the Shelter Coordinator, or on-call personnel, of problematic areas promptly and efficiently.
  • Manage client records to ensure accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Intervene and appropriately de-escalate crises as needed.
  • Be available for clients including making rounds on a regular basis during your shift.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for families with children who are staying at the shelter by ensuring that policy and procedures are being followed.
  • Work in a professional manner with internal and external entities.
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of clients served.
  • Assist with maintenance and upkeep of the shelter facility and report any repair and/or supply needs to Shelter Coordinators.
  • Complete duties on each shift as required including additional work as directed by Shelter Coordinator.
  • Accurately complete intakes and exits as needed and fully completes required paperwork.
  • Answer the phone and provide correct and accurate information to the caller.
  • Prepare shift reports for other staff including Case Manager and Shelter Coordinator in the guest file and verbal report. Prepare shift reports in the daily log as needed.
  • Maintain community living environment in accordance with agency policy and procedure.
  • Participate in mandatory monthly staff meetings, other trainings, and agency events as assigned.
  • Help train newly hired staff as directed by Shelter Coordinator.
  • Accurately enter data into appropriate program databases during shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

One year certificate from a college or technical school and three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Computer Skills 

Demonstrates proficient computer skills and familiarity of Microsoft Office software applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  May also require the ability to use Access, and desktop publishing software as required.  Ability to learn and effectively use various data collection and database management systems to record data as required.  Demonstrates familiarity and proficiency with Internet tools and techniques for searching, extracting, and processing information.
