Position Overview: This position is responsible for the overall care and maintenance of the retail store aquariums and associated life support systems to include display aquariums, waterfalls, bait, quarantine systems, and exhibits.
Essential Job Functions:
Under general supervision of the Senior Operations Manager, be responsible for the specimens and associated life support systems (LSS) for the all display aquariums, exhibits, and associated workspaces. Observes specimen health and behavior and performs the care necessary to keep exhibit animals in healthy condition. Maintain environmentally accurate displays. Observes and maintains life support systems and insures that all LSS are functioning properly. Keep accurate records monitoring specimen health, behavior, feedings, and LSS maintenance. Manages collections though acquisition of new specimens and maintains appropriate permits for that state. Reports in writing weekly to Corporate Aquarium Manager or their agent. Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, rotating schedule, and holidays required. Assist with all special events and other duties as time and work load permits and as assigned by manager
Bachelors of Science in a life science or related field or equivalent experience
Minimum of 2+ years' experience in an aquarium related husbandry position
Proven ability to maintaining the mechanical LSS components of the aquarium including, but not limited to: pumps, motors, sand filters, cartridge filters, chillers, ozone treatment systems, flow switches, pressure gauges, aeration devices, ultraviolet sterilizers, make up water preparation systems, water testing and sampling equipment
Demonstrated knowledge of fish disease diagnosis, treatment, and necropsy procedures
Scuba Certification or ability to become certified within 6 months of employment
Experience with plumbing, some electrical knowledge, and carpentry preferred
Demonstrated self-starter with ability to work independently
Must be able to stand for extended periods
Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds
Proven organizational skills and ability to keep accurate, consistent records relating to all aspects of animal care and LSS maintenance
Proven ability to communicate clearly with all maintenance, store, and events personnel
Proven ability to maintain proper water quality, which includes manipulation through the use of chemicals
Demonstrated ability to follow all safety precautions for equipment and procedures while working on the job in a humid and possibly wet environment
Ability to develop and deliver informational presentations in a friendly and professional manner to small, medium, or large groups, to include feeding shows and dive presentations
