Position Summary-

Current availability need is: Afternoon/ Evening, Overnight asleep shifts, and Weekend Shifts

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) supports people with intellectual disabilities and/or mental health needs in making day-to-day choices that lead to greater independence and opportunities to participate in and contribute to community life. A successful DSP function as an integral member of a team that seeks to understand the likes, dislikes, hopes, and dreams of persons receiving services to better support them as they make choices and progress toward their goals.

House Manager AND/OR Coordinator

Qualifications Minimum:

Employees must be at least 19 years of age have a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid driver’s license, good driving record, have reliable transportation, and current auto insurance, and pass background checks. The employee must have a full range of motion, physical strength, and ability to achieve and maintain required training and certification including but not limited to ASDD Agency training. Medication Aide, Standard First Aid and CPR Certification; physical intervention techniques certification, and other training or certifications as required. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with individuals supported, stakeholders, and other staff members both verbally and in writing.


Coursework in a human services-related field and/or one year of experience supporting people with developmental disabilities and/or mental health needs.

Responsibility Job Duties:

A. Service Location Management

The DSP assists and supports through teaching, modeling, and participation in housekeeping chores and location management (shopping, meal prep, cleaning) and transportation to maximize the individual's skills, abilities, and independence

1. Supports the person receiving services to carry out shopping activities as needed

2. Assist and ensure that meals are prepared.

3. Complete household routines.

4. Ensures maintenance of household is completed.

5. Transportation, vehicle maintenance, and insurance

B. Facilitation of services - The DSP fulfills the role of daily facilitator related to individual service plan development and implementation.

1. Understands and participates in individual service planning and delivery process.

2. Maintains a collaborative professional relationship with the person receiving support and all support team members following ethical standards of practice.

3. Implements an individualized plan based on the individual’s preferences needs and interests.

4. Assists and/or facilitates the review of the achievement of the individual's outcomes.

C. Health and Wellness

The DSP promotes the health and wellness of people receiving services.

1. Administers medications accurately and in accordance with agency policy and procedures.

2. Observes and implement appropriate actions to promote healthy living and prevent illness and accidents

3. Uses appropriate first aid and safety procedures when responding to emergencies.

4. Assists individuals in scheduling, keeping, and following through on all health appointments.

5. Assists individuals in completing personal care activities.

6. Assists with identifying, securing, and using needed adaptive equipment and therapies.

7. Assists individuals in implementing health and medical treatments.

D. Organizational Participation

The DSP's daily work and conduct reflect the organizational mission, policies, and procedures, as they fulfill their role and responsibilities within the organization and represent the organization in a respectful manner.

1. Is aware of the organizational mission and priorities and how it relates to their job roles and responsibilities.

2. Is aware of and implements all organizational policies and procedures.

3. Documentation- The DSP adheres to the requirements for documentation within the organization and manages these requirements in a thorough and efficient manner.

4. Maintains accurate records, collecting, compiling, and evaluating data and submitting records to appropriate sources in a timely manner.

5. Maintains standards of confidentiality and ethical practice.

6. Completes all required training in a timely manner.

F. Empowerment of People supported

The DSP enhances the ability of people receiving services to lead a self-determining life by providing the support and information necessary to build self-esteem, assertiveness, and independence.

1. Assists and supports individuals in making informed choices, following through on responsibilities, and trying new experiences.

2. Promotes individual participation in support services, consulting the person and involving him or her in the support process.

3. Provides opportunities for the participant to be a self-advocate, encouraging and assisting the individual to speak on his or her own behalf.

G. Assessment the DSP is knowledgeable of and participates in both formal and informal assessment practices in order to respond to the needs, desires, and interests of the individual served.

H. Advocacy –The DSP is knowledgeable about the diverse challenges facing individuals (i.e. human rights) and actively participates in his or her role as an advocate.

I. Community and Service Networking- The DSP is knowledgeable about the formal and informal resources and supports available in the community and assists people receiving services to gain access to such supports.

J. Building and Maintaining Friendships and Relationships. - The DSP supports people receiving services in building and strengthening skills necessary to develop and maintain friendships and other personal relationships.

K. Crisis Intervention- The DSP is knowledgeable about crisis prevention, intervention, and resolution techniques and uses that knowledge and techniques when necessary to support people receiving services.

M.-Knowledge, Information, and Professionalism- The DSP is knowledgeable about the career and education-related concerns of individuals and supports individuals in all aspects related to obtaining and maintaining vocational opportunities.

Performance Expectations, Working Conditions, and Physical demands

Employees are expected to demonstrate reliable, consistent, and predictable attendance and report to work physically and mentally prepared to adequately perform the functions of the position. While in a paid status employees are expected to be actively engaged in official UHS work-related activities.
