The VP, General Counsel and Secretary reports to the Chairman, CEO & President and is responsible for leading Legal, and Compliance departments, and serves as the chief legal advisor of the company.

The position is a member of the Executive Team and Senior Leadership. The VP is responsible for managing customer relationships (internal and external), working as a business partner by identifying strategic advantages where possible, and assessing legal and compliance risk.

The VP – General Counsel and Secretary is expected to:

  • Develop and implement strategy and thought leadership.
  • Actively contribute as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. 
  • Collaborate on company-wide strategies and initiatives with peers and reporting teams to instill a culture of communication and transparency focused on employee engagement and attaining results.
  • Serves as Corporate Secretary. In this role, works with Chair of Board to advise on agenda items and presentations. Prepares and records meeting minutes. In addition, advises Board and Committees on various governance matters
  • Ensure departments compliant with company policies, procedures and corporate compliance as well as federal and state regulations. Involved in complex case decisions and resolving issues that may arise. 
  • Works closely with other departments on new initiatives and changes to existing products and/or processes. 
  • Foster a growth-oriented, positive and encouraging environment while keeping employees and management accountable to company policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Provide the team guidance as needed to ensure the team maintains a high level of delivery excellence while following streamlined processes.
  • Maximize performance in teams, oversight of team coaching, accountability and development.
  • Provide Counsels company-wide management on the legal implications of all company activities, provides legal services as required in judicial proceedings, and keeps abreast of legislative and administrative regulatory developments and problems.
  • Obtains the services of outside counsel as required to complement available internal legal resources.
  • Be an active participant in industry organizations, such as ACLI and/or state based industry associations
  • Foster a culture that reflects the Boston Mutual Brand – provide positive and proactive support to employees and internal and external customers.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

 
Education:   
  • JD required

Experience:  

  • Appropriate legal and management experience for the position.
  • Experience relevant to the key responsibilities of the position. 
  • Experience developing, leading and managing teams preferred.  Ability to attract, develop and maintain high performers. Experience working directly with senior leadership. .
  • Self-driven, highly organized and very effective time management skills.

Hybrid Work Model

At our Canton location, employees will be onsite 4 days per week, Monday - Thursday, starting 5/1/23.
