Job Summary:

An Application Engineer is responsible for the development of new software technologies as well as the maintenance and support of existing software solutions.  This role is expected to function as a leader within the technology team providing guidance and expertise to peers and more junior members.  This role typically works in conjunction with other technical leaders to design and development solutions that support the wide-variety of business needs within the certification and licensure industry. 

 

An Application Engineer primarily focuses on web development efforts that are utilized in a high availability, clustered web environment.   This role works in conjunction with project management and other technical disciplines to create websites and applications that fulfill our internal and client business requirements according to budget, scope, design, quality standards and timeline.

 

Key Duties:

  • (30%) Participate in the design and development of new applications and websites
  • (30%) Design and architect components of larger complete solutions
  • (30%) Lead development teams as well as plan and lead development team activities
  • (10%) Perform research into new tools and technologies for use by the development team

 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design and development of new applications
  • Translate use-cases and other requirement types into code according to a defined software development lifecycle (SDLC)
  • Perform at a high level of one or more of the following
    • Design and develp user interfaces, with the ability to utilize web designs and create full styled sites from scratch with or without various style frameworks
    • Design and develp services and APIs in the .NET framework / .NET Core, utilizing a variety of transactional data stores and third-party technologies.
    • Design and develp database objects and structure with knowledge of database structure, performance and design
  • Perform unit and system testing of all web applications when necessary
  • Develop and adjust solution mock-ups based on requirements and feedback in a variety of forms
  • Interface with both internal and external stakeholders to develop and evaluate appropriate functional specifications
  • Assist in maintaining and enhancing Scantron’s Legacy web applications based on departmental priorities
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements in existing software solutions in order to ensure optimal functionality and performance
  • Provide support and guidance to internal user groups regarding existing software solutions
  • Support the development of software documentation and other support materials
  • Mentor and potentially manage team members
  • Promote and reinforce development best practices throughout the technical team
  • Operate as a technical lead on solutions development efforts when assigned by leadership team
    • Provide technical tasking of peers and junior members of the team
    • Perform code reviews
    • Provide consultation, support and general technical guidance to members of solutions team
    • Provide accurate estimates of solution development efforts
    • Research and evaluate potential 3rd party technlogies for use in solution
  • Participate in Scantron’s on-call rotation
  • Other duties as assigned by the department

 

The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills:

 

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 7+ years of experience developing software
  • Experience in the following: Oracle 11g (or higher), SQL Server 2012 (or higher), C#, ASP.Net, XML, HTML/HTML5, CSS, JS and/or modern web design framework (e.g. AngularJS)
  • Ability to routinely demonstrate initiative and an ability to work autonomously
  • Desire to operate and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Multi-task effectively
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and data gathering skills
  • Experience implementing web-based solutions in a real-world environment
  • Demonstrable leadership potential and/or experience
