Hours:

  • Full-time; 36 Hours/Week
  • Monday-Wednesday, Friday: 12:00-7:30pm
  • Saturday: 10:00am-5:30pm
  • Thursdays and Sundays off 

Principal Duties:

  • Greet, assist and direct the public
  • Perform data entry for all Customer Service activities and other departments in the agency
  • Assist customers with/and process adoptions
  • Reconcile cash, checks, and credit card payments with data entry to the system
  • Maintain and balance individual daily cash drawers; handle large sums of money
  • Sell pet licenses
  • Accept monetary and non-monetary donations from the public
  • Assist public with Rainbow Bridge services by offering compassion and assistance with RB packages available
  • Register the public for all NHS offered community classes, i.e. dog obedience, Camp Kindness, Pet Avocation applications, Breeders Permits, Feral Cat Colony applications, volunteer applications, foster care applications, etc.
  • Resolve customer complaints in person and on the phone
  • Intake and process all over the counter stray animals (including wildlife); and owner surrendered animals that are brought to the shelter
  • Intake and process all over the counter animals brought in from outside agencies, rescues, etc.
  • Prescreen owner surrendered animals for entry into the adoption program
  • Scan all incoming animals for a microchip and transfer all incoming animals from traps and carriers
  • Be able to identify and properly handle aggressive animals
  • Record and report behavior and/or medical observations on incoming animals
  • Impound animals back to owners who can provide proof of ownership, per individual city ordinances – charging appropriate fees, etc.
  • Educate the public on city ordinances and proper care of animals
  • Write clear and concise memos
  • Complete customer Lost and Found reports and walk public through stray kennels to identify pets
  • Perform follow up calls to customers with current Lost/Found reports on file
  • Represent NHS in a professional, compassionate manner to the public
  • Perform any and all other duties as may be assigned by the Customer Service Director
  • Based on departmental needs, this position may also be trained on Opening/Closing duties of the Shelter, and the Lost & Found desk

Educational Requirements:

  • Must have High School diploma or GED

Experience, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of customer service experience
  • Computer, filing and general clerical skills – proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Must possess maturity, good judgment and a professional manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • Pleasant manner in telephone and personal contacts
  • Ability to work with animals without allergic reaction
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to stand/walk for the majority of the shift
