Description

This person will serve as the Network & Computer Systems Engineer for Educational Service Unit 7 located in Columbus, NE. This position primarily provides upper tier technical assistance for all of the schools in our seven county region.

This position maintains the server and network structure in our datacenter and monitors the VPNs that connect to the schools in our region. Successful candidate must be considered an expert in High Available Windows Server clusters, Apple Server structure, Active Directory, VLANs, HyperV, VMWare, VPN, OpnSense Firewalls, Ubiquiti wired and wireless hardware, and scripting used for automation of tasks.

REPORTS TO:

Network Operations Director

REQUIRED RESPONSIBILITIES AND JOB TASKS:

  1. Oversees the operation of the LAN / WAN related network and server services for ESU 7 and member schools.

  2. Remodels and integrates existing network facilities such as switches, WAPs, VoIP, servers and UPSs.

  3. Coordinates the design, planning, purchasing, installation, configuration, maintenance and testing of all network elements.

  4. Efficiently manages network services, IP addressing, logical architecture, network traffic monitoring and shaping.

  5. Maintains network software and hardware updates.

  6. Integrates APIs, scripts and utilities to automate repetitive routines and administer network and server control systems.

  7. Creates, documents, and maintains electronic data backup of server systems to prevent loss of information.

  8. Maintains detailed documentation of the network and server infrastructure.

  9. Protects data, software, and hardware by coordinating, planning and implementing network security measures.

  10. Read trade magazines and technical manuals, and attend conferences and seminars to maintain knowledge of emerging industry trends.

  11. Setup and maintain VPN between ESU 7 member schools and ESU 7 datacenter.

  12. Manage virtualized server hosting clusters for ESU 7 and member schools.

  13. Conducts training programs to teach others to use computer equipment or hardware / software.

  14. Provide technical support and training to department members and school LAN Managers as needed.

  15. Other duties as assigned.

TECHNOLOGY EXPECTATIONS:

  1. Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, electronic equipment, and other computer hardware and software, including applications and basic programming / scripting.

  2. Operating Systems – Knowledge of Mac OS X and Windows, and Linux/UNIX client / server network operating systems administration and current trends.

  3. Telecommunications/Networking- Knowledge of transmission, routing, switching, control, and operation of wired, wireless, PBX or VoIP telecommunications systems along with a thorough understanding of the OSI model, networking protocols within, and TCP/IPv4 subnetting.

  4. ESU 7 Social Media resources

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Inside offices and throughout the ESU 7 campus and district buildings.

  1. Primary work area is air-conditioned, but may travel to non air-conditioned buildings subject to extremes of temperature and humidity.
