Job Description

The Pennie Z. Davis Child Development Center is looking for a Full Time Assistant Teacher-Floater.  

Schedule:  Scheduled 40 hours, anytime between 7am to 6pm (Monday-Friday).

The Pennie Z. Davis Child Development Center (CDC) is a department of the Jewish Community Center located at 333 S 132nd St, Omaha, NE. Our CDC offers a child-centered early childhood curriculum honoring the general sequence of child development with attention to the uniqueness of each child. Age-appropriate activities and curriculum will keep children captivated and encourage growth and learning: emotionally, physically and spiritually. The children will build meaningful relationships with their classmates and teachers with whom they experience each day.

  • Associate’s Degree in Education preferred: Family and Child Development, Early Childhood, or related field

Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum and Classroom Management

  • Works with the Lead Teacher to create an inviting and engaging learning environment with developmentally appropriate activities, uses the 9 areas of learning identified in the Creative Curriculum system
  • Implements Jewish curriculum (including stories, artifacts, Hebrew, etc) while highlighting our core values
  • Provides opportunities for both 1:1, small, and large group work
  • Uses observation and children’s interests to inform curriculum
  • Asks open-ended questions to encourage critical thinking
  • Documents learning through portfolios, newsletters, wall documentation, and photos
  • Works with JCC program staff and coordinates outside special events
  • Remains alert and flexible when supervising children’s movement throughout the environment and circulates accordingly (indoors and outdoors) and guides the children as necessary.  Ensures supervisor of children by sight and sound at all times
  • Uses dual focus to watch both large groups as well as engage with individuals or small groups of children
  • Keeps daily attendance records of children and submits regularly. Reminds parents to sign children in and out every day.
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management techniques, which includes reinforces positive behavior, redirects, and enforces logical consequences; minimizes use of time out
  • Validates children’s perspectives during problem solving and conflict resolution, and works through until a suitable solution is reached

Relationships with Parents

  • Seeks a partnership with parents, with the child’s best interests always in min
  • Interacts with parents and appears available and approachable with parents (i.e., greets parents warmly at the beginning and end of the day)
  • Listens and is responsive to the needs of parents

Physical Requirements

This position requires the individual to be physically fit in order to lead a wide variety of individual and group activities; may include diapering and assisting children with toileting. In addition, requires, but not limited to the following:

  • stamina to work long periods of time in a physically active environment;
  • ability to lift and carry preschool age child up to 50 lbs;
  • ability to sit on floor/at child’s level and participate in all children’s activities; and
  • ability to work outdoors as needed.
