AVP Accounting Policy
Oversee accounting policy within Corporate Finance responsible for the research and implementation of accounting principles under GAAP, IFRS, Statutory and SEC standards for Pacific LifeCorp and subsidiaries with significant interaction with senior management, division financial management and independent public accountants. The position requires a very strong technical accounting and financial reporting background. The position provides expertise to senior management by analyzing new accounting standards or complex transactions and communicating the potential impacts to the Company and recommending alternatives to optimize the results for the Company.
Provides technical research, analysis and implementation of new and existing accounting standards. The position would be the primary resource to Corporate Finance senior management and the operating divisions with respect to GAAP, IFRS, SEC and Statutory accounting principles (SAP).
Consultations and detailed memos regarding accounting for insurance products, investments, consolidation, etc.
Review of new products and documentation of accounting conclusions
Update accounting policies and procedures for insurance (and related topics such as reserving, deferred acquisition costs), investments, consolidation, etc.
Implementation of new GAAP, SAP and IFRS accounting guidance
Monitor other potential changes to GAAP, SAP and IFRS
Review reinsurance transactions
Provide senior management with impact analysis of the new accounting principles and recommendations on strategies to optimize the impact to the company.
Develop strong working relationships with finance professionals in each of the applicable divisions.
Participate on the ACLI Accounting Committee, NAIC accounting related meetings and other appropriate industry groups.
Provide technical training to Corporate Finance and divisions on new and existing technical accounting standards, research tools, etc.
Act as a resource to the external auditors on behalf of the Company with respect to audit procedures performed, technical accounting and/or reporting and evaluation of accounting and/or reporting errors and relevant documentation, etc. Present various accounting and/or reporting positions to the external auditors and actively participate in the completion of required memos (e.g. policy memos, deficiency memos, etc.) and other required documentation.
Analyzing complex transactions, including those related to investments, insurance/reinsurance, financing as well as mergers and acquisitions.
Actively participate in strategic projects that significantly enhance Corporate Finance and the Company.
Develop various presentations for use by senior management (such as impact of alternative options when analyzing potential accounting options).
Factors for success:
Minimum 8-12 years with progressive experience in technical accounting research and documentation
Knowledge of life and annuity products
Strong working knowledge of US GAAP for insurance products and investments
Strong working knowledge of SAP for insurance products
Working knowledge of SEC reporting and IFRS accounting
Strong technical, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
Deal effectively with individuals of all levels of the corporate structure
Ability to obtain support from various teams without direct authority
Experience leading critical initiatives, including project development, identifying needed resources and key milestones, and effectively monitoring progress to conclusion
