Job Description

Pacific Life is currently seeking an Underwriting Team Manager to join the Life Insurance Division in Lynchburg, VA.  The Life Insurance Division works with financial and insurance professionals to give families and businesses the life insurance coverage needed to help meet important financial protection, wealth accumulation and wealth preservation goals.


The Life Underwriting Manager will work under the direction of the VP of New Business and Life Underwriting, and will be responsible for building and maintaining strategic customer relationships, strengthening underwriting mortality and risk assessment, and ensuring the team meets or exceeds customer service, quality and professional development standards for Pacific Lifes Lynchburg, VA operations.  The manager will be able to influence strategy and lead change; use analytics and data to assess performance, and work as a coach and mentor to build and support a high performance team. He/she will be an advocate for both the employee and customer, working effectively and cooperatively with others in the Underwriting Department and across cross-functional teams to drive efficiency, innovation and help our customers grow their business.  The manager should demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to organize and express ideas and assessments clearly and concisely and be able to tailor messaging to effectively communicate to both internal and external customers.  

Responsibilities Include:

Ensure team and individuals meet or exceed all quality/mortality expectations
Ensure team and individuals meet or exceed all customer service standards
Build and maintain strong relationships with our customers, the underwriting team and business leaders
Create and execute quarterly and annual performance reviews
Actively seek and encourage professional development opportunities for team
Maintain a strong working knowledge of business processes, guidelines, products and systems
Continually look for ways to improve the underwriting process and customer experience
Influence strategy
Participate in special projects as assigned
Visit customers and/or attend industry conferences as needed

Bachelors degree
FALU and FLMI designations preferred
Minimum 5 years relevant work experience and 3 years of people leadership/management
Background in impaired risk and large case underwriting; EKG interpretation preferred
Proficient with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
Strong written and oral communication skills
Ability to work independently and make timely, high quality decisions under tight deadlines
Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Project management and/or process improvement experience preferred
