Industrial Hygienist, NEBCO, Inc.
Evaluates NEBCO’s compliance with regard to state and federal occupational health and safety regulations, laws, rules, and codes.
Educates and informs employees about occupational health and safety hazards by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.
Conduct air monitoring for various types of potential exposure hazards, such as; silica, respiratory and total dust, chemicals, fungal spore, and personal noise dosimetry.
Conduct all sampling in accordance with applicable regulations.
Perform unsupervised field tasks, air sampling, sample logging, and sample labeling.
Gather and analyze data and other information to be used in the preparation of reports.
Inspects and evaluates work operations and production methods, and controls to determine potential contaminant emission sources or related health hazards associated with work place conditions.
Help develop and implement, as appropriate, safety and industrial hygiene initiatives, guidelines and programs.
Conduct scientific research to provide data on possible harmful conditions in the workplace.
Train and educate employees on possible harmful conditions in the workplace.
Ensures all industrial hygiene and safety work, materials, processes and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
Identifies deficiencies, recommends corrective measures and assists with the development of implementation plans at operational levels within the company.
Ensure and reinforce that employees are properly following health and safety procedures.
Act as a liaison for federal regulatory agencies.
May interface with OSHA or MSHA inspectors on behalf of the company.
Preparing and adhering to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to the company.
Monitor and document facility performance by conducting inspections to control and monitor processes and operations.
Drafts reports with lab test results and presents to the Safety Director for review and approval. Will interpret results in terms of potential impairment to the health of employees and discusses concerns with appropriate personnel.
Reviews existing control measures, comments on effectiveness, and makes recommendations, where necessary, for improvement.
Keeps current on existing and proposed changes in health and safety regulations.
Assist with technical and cost proposals.
Performs safety duties as requested by the NEBCO Safety Director. Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, or similar life science field and three years industrial hygiene related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must have a thorough knowledge of an assigned environmental specialty and service area. Knowledge of modern teaching and training methods and ability to conduct training programs. Must have current working knowledge of governmental regulations that affect employee and environmental health and safety.
Must have an ability to communicate effectively. Effective analytic, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to read and comprehend office procedures, instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write routine business correspondence. Ability to compose reports and present to all levels of management. Ability to develop external working relationships.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Effective methods of organizing and utilizing data, equipment, personnel and resources. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables. Must have good investigative skills.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge and demonstrated computer skills in Excel Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Valid NE driver’s license, with a good driving record. Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) designation would be helpful. Construction industry experience preferred.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to operate and maintain a variety of monitoring and testing equipment. Must also be able to analyze and evaluate the variety of technical data, test results and plans. Must be flexible in work assignments. Must have excellent collaborative skills and assist the team to establish a safe and secure work environment.
The person must maintain a good attendance record due to the support role of this position. Due to the nature of the job and the need to cross-departmental lines, must have excellent human relations skills. Must have good communication skills, especially facilitating training programs.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 25 to 50 pounds. Must have the ability to maneuver through construction facilities, when required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work is generally performed in an office environment, but requires travel to a variety of locations to perform field work in all weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to noise from basic office equipment operation, and occasionally construction equipment. May also provide support services to the yard and plant groups. Dress code is casual. The noise level in the work environment is varied based on location. Work may also be performed in enclosed spaces. The expanded work schedule follows construction cycles, typically March through November. Early morning hours may be required to facilitate and attend safety meetings. This job will entail approximately 30-40% travel which will be mostly day trips. This is a non-smoking campus.
