Summary
Provides preventative and corrective repairs on company automobiles, diesel trucks, and other vehicles or machinery by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.
Troubleshoots and repairs company vehicles and equipment as needed, including passenger vehicles, light duty trucks, heavy duty trucks and other designated machinery.
Performs preventative maintenance on fleet vehicles and equipment.
Performs preventative maintenance and repair on hydraulic systems on fleet vehicles and equipment.
Performs all work in accordance with schedules, policies, procedures and standards of quality and safety.
As needed: Raises vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle. Removes unit such as engine, transmission, or differential. Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear. Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings. Overhauls or replaces carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps. Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks. Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
Adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solders leaks in radiator.
Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers. Changes flat tires as needed.
Maintains and assures cleanliness and neatness of shop area. Assures safety standards are met.
Accurately complete service outline for vehicles, and complete daily forklift inspections.
Must have a valid driver licenses or a class A or B would be help but not required, must pick up parts and, tires when required from vendors.
Education and/or Experience:
Requires a vocational/technical diploma; or three to six months related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Previous experience working on diesel Mack trucks preferred. A valid CDL driver's license is preferred, or must be able to qualify and obtain a CDL within a reasonable amount of time. Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the company’s insurance plan.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills:
Minimal computer skills required. May be required to update department work files on occasion.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) mechanic certification required. Diesel/Auto technology or equivalent preferred but not required.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to operate with minimal supervision, be a trouble shooter and take initiative to investigate and resolve problems. Must be a self starter. Must be able to get along well with others.
Other Qualifications:
Must be flexible regarding work schedule. Must be able to work nights and weekends. Department personnel are on call 24 hours a day and must be reachable by phone.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands & fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employees are required to wear protective eye protection.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees are required to wear protective ear protection. There are some chemical exposures that are part of performing the job. MSDS sheets are available in the department. This is a non-smoking campus.
Condition of Employment:
Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if required) are required as conditions of employment.
