Notice of Position Opening

We are currently recruiting to fill the following position:

Boom Truck Driver, Omaha

Department / Location:      Watkins Concrete Block, Omaha, NE  


Drives a boom truck to transport concrete block, brick, bagged concrete products and other various construction related warehouse products by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.

Daily perform a pre and post-trip safety check on equipment and the truck to assure a safe and operational vehicle.  Document any maintenance that may be required.  Determine the most effective route to and from the delivery site.  Maintain mileage reports and accurate log books to meet DOT criteria. 

Transport and maintain condition of any of the concrete block, brick, or warehouse products as part of the company inventory that can be safely hauled on assigned vehicle.  May transport product to an affiliated company &/or pick up product from an affiliated company.

Assist in loading and cubing of product (may be done by lift truck or by hand) &/or make corrections and adjustments as needed. 

At the discretion of dispatch, incumbent will be required to do pick-ups of pallets and block which may be done by hand or boom truck.  Pick-ups may require hand work to assure orderly pick-up.

For delivery of product must verify the load matches the load ticket.

Must strap and secure load to comply with state, federal and local laws and company safety policy.

At the destination site, remove strap and securings.  Unload using the boom or mule in the area requested by the customer.  May unload by hand if necessary according to company safety policies and procedures.

Follow guidelines and instructions by dispatch personnel.

When the workload is light, assist other areas--repair/maintenance in the plant area, yard clean-up, snow removal, pallet repair, help in block plant or drive other equipment for affiliated companies.

Education and/or Experience:                                                            

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or equivalent.  Prefer a Class A CDL.    Prefer 1-2 years of tractor trailer driving experience.  Must be a minimum of 21 years old.

Language Skills:                                                         

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, city directories, road maps, load tickets, SDS sheets and memos.  Ability to write routine correspondence or documentation.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:                                                   

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability:                                                      

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must have a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class B minimum).  To drive a PUP truck, a Class A is required.   Must have a good driving record.

Other Skills and Abilities:                                                      

1-2 years of previous commercial truck driving experience is preferred.  Must meet insurability for driving requirements of the company.  Must meet the Department of Transportation(DOT) physical requirements and carry a physical exam card, which is to be kept current according to DOT guidelines.

Other Qualifications:                                                              

Must be able to work a flexible work schedule during busy season.  Must be able to work late or irregular hours.  Previous knowledge of construction and construction products is helpful.  Must understand and maintain the internal and external customer service responsibilities of the position.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit while driving; use hands & fingers to handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. Must have agility to maintain balance on a ladder, catwalk or access the bed of a truck.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds to waist height.  Must be able to lift, place and set warehouse products as required during load preparation, loading and unloading.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  Must wear protective devices as required by the company safety policy in the performance of the job.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions (may be extreme hot and cold). The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts, minimal amount of non-hazardous dust daily and fumes or other possible airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to high and precarious places which requires the agility to maintain balance on a boom truck and pup trailer while loading/unloading, tarping and strapping.  May be vibration from the equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud.  Must be flexible regarding the work assigned due to temporary job assignments in the Block Plant, the yard or the Warehouse.  This is a non-smoking campus.

Condition of Employment:

Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements.  Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if appropriate) are required as conditions of employment.
