Transload Operator/Conductor, OL&B Railroad, Lincoln, NE

Summary

Supports year round transloading, switching operations, track maintenance, and the repair

and maintenance of locomotives and rail car fleet, by performing the following duties:

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.

Provide switching and other railroad support services as needed and be knowledgeable and abide by all Company Rules, Safety Programs and Policy. Abide by all FRA, AAR, OSHA, DOT, and other applicable regulations.

Transload Operations 35%

Safely operate forklifts while unloading building materials from railcars and trucks, placing materials in designated storage areas, and loading material onto trucks to go to destination. Climbing onto railcars, operating straps, opening and closing railcar doors, and operating with ramps. Completing inventory documentation, shipping papers, and other documentation. Stacking and banding material as necessary. Make sure correct material arrived and correct material is shipped out. Operate other equipment as necessary.

Switching Operations 20%

Working within a switch crew to perform safe railcar switching movements including, roll by inspection of railcars, delivering railcars to and from customers and partner railroads, provide accurate railcar counts, understanding rail yard, determining car movements, operating switches, watching for obstructions, climbing ladders onto railcars, operating handbrakes, riding on railcars and locomotives, using and understanding radio communications and hand communication.

Track and Yard Maintenance 20%

Performing track maintenance following Track Worker Safety Program while working around and using maintenance of way tools and equipment. Maintaining rail yard including, vegetation, roadway maintenance, drainage, snow removal, and other duties, to ensure a safe working environment. 

Facilities and Equipment Maintenance 10%

Assist in maintenance of facilities and all associated equipment, including, but not limited to, OL&B locomotives, overhead crane, forklift, bobcat, air compressor, company pickups and dump trucks.  Equipment must be kept in sound and safe operating condition.

Rail Car Repair 5% +

Assist with maintenance and repairs of OL&B and foreign railcars, and subsequent completion of necessary repair reports. Assist in maintaining inventory of car repair parts. 

Other duties may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience: 

High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Must have demonstrated skills and aptitude for mechanical repairs. Must have previously demonstrated experience of working in a general labor environment. Technical degree / vocational training in railroad programs or related area is helpful but not necessary.  Previous railroad experience or training is helpful but not required. Previous forklift and welding experience is helpful but not required. We will train the right candidate.

Language Skills:  

Ability to read and interpret documents such as railroad safety rules, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, switch lists, bills of lading, load tickets, and repair sheets. Must be able to understand and follow work directions as given.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  

Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the company insurance program. Employees must be capable of receiving certification in CPR and first aid within the first six months of employment. Employees will be trained and required to become conductor certified, forklift, and all other equipment certified necessary to perform their job duties. 

Computer Skills:   

Tracking and reporting computer skills attained through MS Office products as needed.

Other Skills and Abilities:  

Must be proficient on the use of hand, power tools and equipment.  Mechanical aptitude helpful.  Must have a good attendance record and an ability to be to work on time and meet on call requirements.  Must maintain a clean and safe yard and car repair environment.

Physical Demands:

Applicant is required to pass a pre-employment back screen, vision test and drug test. This position has extensive physical demands. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, work in a bent over position for extended periods of time and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands, and fingers to handle, feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to walk; climb on a ladder and other raised platforms to a height of 16' or balance; stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 – 75 pounds to a height of 48", turn, twist and carry.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus as defined by the National Railroad Association.  Personal protection equipment is required as the position operates in a rail car environment--steel toe shoes, gloves, goggles, etc.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; working with machinery, hand and power tools, work with extreme heat and vibration. The employee also works outside with year-round weather conditions.  The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles. The employee must be able to work with and around railroad equipment and environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud. This is a non-smoking campus.

Normal hours are Monday thru Friday, 7 am to 3 pm. The position may require extended work hours to meet production needs which may include nights and weekends. There will be the occasional shift of up to 12 hours. There will also be the occasional weekend shift and the occasional 2 hour on-call. Conductors are Hours of Service positions. Shifts cannot exceed 12 hours on duty and will have a minimum of 10 hours of off duty time prior to starting a new shift. Maximum days worked cannot exceed 6 consecutive days. If 6 consecutive days are worked, there will be a minimum of 48 hours of off duty before starting next shift.

Condition of Employment:

Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements.  Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens are required as conditions of employment.
