Yardman / Backup Plant / Equipment Operator

Responsible for general labor support for the plant, support batching activities, observation to assure that proper amount of concrete is being batched and the yard area of the concrete plant is maintained by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
Abide by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely.
Performs daily cleaning of the dust collectors and tunnel areas by sweeping and maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Ensures safe and efficient operation of the plant through maintenance, inspection and repair of the equipment and operating conditions of the concrete plant.
Provides backup support and performs batching duties as needed by use of control panels and related equipment to heat, dry, and mix ingredients, to weigh and mix aggregate, cement, and water to produce concrete. Observes gauges, dials, and operation of machinery to ensure conformance to processing specifications.
Load concrete into trucks. Assure appropriate tickets are written for orders according to requirements.
Operates a front end loader or fork lift according to requirements of the current need.
Work with appropriate personnel to identify and plan daily operations.
Check brakes, tires, springs, engine oil, etc. on a daily basis. Grease, change oil, change tires and perform other maintenance as required.
Pour leftover concrete into forms. When concrete is dry, break latches and move block to designated areas.
Other duties may be assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred. Previous experience in a construction &/or construction products related field is desired. Three to six months related mechanic experience and/or training. Previous experience operating construction machinery or equipment--forklift, pallet loaders, lift truck and a front end loader is helpful.
Ability to read and comprehend load tickets, SDS sheets and the company safety manual. Ability to understand work direction.
Must understand basic numbers and math to count inventory or complete orders.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables. Must be able to distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions in the yard and in the plant area.
Must be capable of learning and operating a computerized batch processing system.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Forklift and Loader certification preferred. If not, must be capable to completing requirements of the program and passing the test in a reasonable period of time.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to develop a good working knowledge of concrete mixes and be capable of meeting required mix specifications. Previous experience in plant maintenance, batch systems and loader operation helpful but not necessary. Must be mechanically inclined to support maintenance roles when necessary. Must have a good sense of detail and work to maintain a clean and safe yard and plant environment. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule during busy season. Must be able to work late or irregular hours.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Would regularly climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; able to talk, hear, and smell. Must be able to use up to 35 pounds of force occasionally. The employee is occasionally required to sit. Direct frontal reaching is required while the employee may be required to lift 25 pounds over the head occasionally, must also be able to lift up to 50 pounds to waist height. Must be able to climb to heights of 125 feet. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Employees are required to wear protective safety gear and eye protection. Must be able to comply with confined space requirements.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, may be extreme hot or cold. Work in a minimal amount of non-hazardous dust daily. May be required to work in any of the environments listed for a temporary job assignment. Must wear any protective devices as required by the company safety policies relating to the assignment being performed. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. This is a year round job. Hours may vary based on daily loading requirements. Must be able to work a flexible work schedule during busy season. Must be able to work late or irregular hours. Occasional Saturday work will be required. This is a non-smoking campus.
Condition of Employment:
Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. This also applies to all transfers, fit-for-duty and return to work programs.
