ORGANIZATIONAL DESCRIPTION: The Immigrant Legal Center (ILC)—a metro Omaha-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit—is the new name for Justice For Our Neighbors-Nebraska (JFON-NE), operating in Nebraska and Southwest Iowa since 1999. Under the new name, we remain an affiliate of Justice For Our Neighbors, a network of 15 state chapters offering more than 40 legal clinics for immigration services. 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION: The ILC Paralegal will report to and will be assigned duties delegated by the Iowa Managing Attorney.  The ILC Paralegal is responsible for assisting with the provision of direct legal services to immigrant clients in Nebraska and Southwest Iowa.  Paralegals assist with cases involving Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status, asylum/refugee matters, u-visas, t-visas, and family based options among others.  Duties involve performing various administrative functions, including but not limited to, the support of clerical, legal research, draft memoranda, media and communications, and program functions. The ILC Paralegal is responsible for carrying out tasks, administrative or otherwise, that the assigned supervising attorney so directs in collaboration with the Operations Manager. The ILC Paralegal may receive assignments from other attorneys according to the organization’s current legal service needs. The ILC Paralegal will work with the ILC Legal Support Team to ensure high quality immigration legal services to ILC clients.

This ILC Paralegal position is located in Omaha, Nebraska with regular travel required to our Council Bluffs, Iowa offices.



Client Communication and Client Advocacy

  • Communicate with clients via telephone calls, email, and mail in form of letters
  • Relay messages to and from clients and attorneys using most appropriate communication means/method
  • Communicate and advocate needs of clients to staff and other community partners appropriately
  • English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpreting for meetings or appearances before administrative bodies such as USCIS interviews as requested
  • Refer clients (existing, potential, and walk-ins) to proper community resources
  • Assist in directing incoming detained clients and families through our intake process for Pro Bono Detainee project
  • Along with our Legal Support Team, assist in directing recent victims of crimes and their families through our intake process and provide additional support/information relevant to the situation presented

Case Management and Legal Services

  • Maintain deadlines using case management system
  • Prepare for USCIS interviews, including, general file review and summary, English to Spanish and Spanish to English interpreting, drafting of witness questions and trial preparation documents, and attendance at both interviews and hearings when necessary
  • Translate forms, letters, declarations, and foreign documents for clients (Spanish to English, English to Spanish)
  • Prepare, copy and mail applications to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for legal staff and assist with filing incoming and outgoing mail
  • Assist with processing client related incoming and outgoing mail and correspondence.
  • Draft documents, including assisting in the preparation of forms, statements, affidavits, cover letters, motions, petitions, briefs, and appeals
  • Perform legal research, including, obtaining statistics and information related in general to any immigration issue, reviewing government based websites related to immigration law or policy, carrying out statutory and case law review via traditional or non-traditional sources, and analyzing any other research issue deemed relevant

Special Projects

  • Perform other duties as required. 
  • Represent ILC at community events and functions, when assigned
  • Occasionally be requested to assist other staff members with other duties as assigned.


  • Spanish language proficiency is required
  • At least 1-2 years of paralegal experience preferred
  • Familiarity with case management and documentation preferred
  • Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to multi task and be detail oriented consistently
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to work sensitively with clients having diverse personalities, lifestyles, cultures, and faiths
  • Strong commitment to public interest legal services
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and communicate tactfully and respectfully with clients
  • Basic knowledge of immigrant rights and/or immigration law is a plus


  • Starting pay: $13.00 - $17.00 per hour based upon experience
