The Corporate Actions Specialist is responsible for the creation and accuracy of the corporate actions contained in the databases of Orion. This position manages a queue with requests from various sources and resolves issues related to corporate action events and affiliated data. The Corporate Actions Specialist will also be responsible for the accuracy and completion of cost basis and tax lot reporting surrounding corporate action events.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Processes Transactional Changes and Security Data for Corporate Actions.
- Ensures all corporate action and income entitlements are reflected accurately.
- Inputs event data on our internal accounting system in an accurate and timely fashion so that portfolio managers can effectively manage assets on behalf of our clients.
- Handles issues/exceptions with custodians, fund accounting agents, and other third parties to ensure accuracy of client investments.
- Manage corporate actions announcements through their lifecycle. Liaison with listed companies to discuss these events, their timing and impact on trading. Publish announcements of these events for brokers, vendors and other market participants. Review Bloomberg, Interactive Data, Thompson Reuter, press release submissions, vendor sites, newspapers, etc. to ensure that all relevant events are captured and tracked to completion.
- Utilizes System Management Software (Salesforce) to work with IT to ensure corporate action data collection and auditing is as technologically accurate and efficient as possible.
- Develops procedures and works with training personnel to ensure team members accurately process events for clients.
- Tests software during development cycle to ensure corporate action functionality is working correctly and new development was done correctly.
- Corporate actions processing for Three Peaks, including mandatory and voluntary reorganizations, bond redemptions, and partial calls and manages complex/non-routine financial entries and unexpected events critical to the client as accurate and timely processing reduces financial risk to the firm.
- Performs regression testing to ensure changes to cost basis system do not negatively affect other areas of costs basis or system in general.
- Manages and maintains cost basis tax lots for changes due to transactional adjustments, corporate action activity, and related systems and processes.
- Identifies and implements process improvements, key controls and system enhancements governing day-to-day activities of cost basis function to increase efficiency and minimize operational risk.
- Assists in development of additional utilities needed to automate, control, validate and research data issues.
Skills Needed to Perform the Job
- Knowledge of financial terminology.
- Understanding of Cost Basis Reporting with regards to Wash Sale Rules, Accounting Methods (i.e. FIFO), Transfer of Assets, Corporate Actions, Short Sale, Corporate Services and Tax Reporting as well as broker reporting of customer cost basis information.
- Strong knowledge of the regulations governing Federal and State tax, retirement, and estate account matters.
- General knowledge of back office processing: account transfers, new accounts, tax reporting, statements, corporate actions, customer services, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of the rules and regulations associated with the current IRS cost basis and gain/loss calculation rules with regards to equities, mutual funds, and debt securities.
- Detailed knowledge of Orion software and internal terminology is helpful.
- Familiarity with how changes to one area of the system affect other areas.
- Ability to process high volume of transactions in an accurate and timely manner.
Education Needed to Perform the Job
- Minimum of a bachelors degree in Business Administration or related field required.
- Orion Industry Certification must be obtained
Experience Needed to Perform the Job
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with Orion technology preferred.
