Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function)
The purpose of this position is to provide timely and effective legal counsel to assist management in achieving its goals while protecting the company's interest.
Typical Duties
Primary duties are to support operations, right of way, engineering and procurement, as assigned. Participate in pipeline incident reviews and direct investigations to manage exposure and optimize recovery of damages to extent appropriate. Manage claims, including potential claims. Advise the company's construction and engineering group on all aspects of construction activity. Support the real estate groups¿ acquisition and management of right of way, and review and draft agreements appropriate for procurement of goods and services related to the company's pipeline operation. Must be a proficient writer of all types of documents including memorandums, contracts, and reports. (60%)
Support the company's commercial and business development activities assigned. Responsibilities include reviewing, drafting and negotiating various types of contracts and communications related to the company's natural gas pipeline and storage business. Manage and resolve commercial disputes consistent with the company's objectives. (20%)
Provide proactive legal counsel as assigned to accomplish management's objectives consistent with existing agreements, laws and regulations. Work may include corporate compliance and governance matters, safety, employment matters and general contract work. This position takes on special projects as assigned from time to time. (20%)
Qualifications
Law degree from an ABA accredited law school with excellent academic credentials.
Must be a licensed to practice law in Nebraska or registered as in-house counsel in Nebraska.
Ten or more years of experience at a major law firm or corporation. Litigation experience preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be skilled in drafting contracts and administrative pleadings.
Effective analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.
Must be able to handle critical time constraints, priorities and deadlines. Must be available outside of normal working hours. Periodic travel for hearings, litigation, negotiations, etc.
Must be able to handle heavy workload, multiple project responsibilities, and continually changing and competing priorities.
