Overview (Job Summary)
Leads research and development data projects, creates analytical tools, and performs experience studies for Consumer Markets that drive business decisions, as a member of the actuarial team. Designs, maintains, and integrates computational routines to support the development and actuarial administration of insurance products, under the supervision of the managing actuary. Builds data pipelines and optimizes data flow and collection. Supports IT, Operations, Actuarial, and Finance on various data initiatives, ensuring data delivery is consistent and that project designs meets business needs. Acquires system domain knowledge necessary to provide insight into data structure and research outcomes. Ensures data integrity and supports data governance.
Responsibilities (Principal Duties and Responsibilities)
Leads and executes complex/cross-divisional analytical projects for the Consumer Markets team, considering resource, process, and technology needs.
Leads, develops, maintains and integrates processes which extract data from standardized or varied data sources.
Completes actual to expected product experience analysis on a monthly basis and improves the systems and procedures that support that analysis.
Under the supervision of the managing actuary, maintains and improves the code base used to support financial projections and actuarial experience efforts.
Participates in project planning sessions with team members to analyze data requirements and provide design recommendations while assisting with the translation of business and technical requirements into detailed design specifications.
Develops and refines full understanding of multiple business domains (business metric criteria, data sources, processes, and behaviors).
Creates and maintains data pipeline architecture.
Builds infrastructure for data extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a variety of data sources using various scripting languages.
Creates insightful data tools for actuarial / business unit consumption.
Develops, maintains, and tests infrastructures for data generation and transfer.
Transforms data for storing in proper formats and structures for querying and analysis.
Creates data validation rules on source data to confirm the data has correct and/or expected values; writes alternate workflow steps or reports back to the source for further analysis and correction of incorrect records when validation rules are not passed.
Develops processes to be applied to extracted source data to move to target state; writes data cleansing functions to get data to properly prune data set to include only fields needed; translates source code values to target value; standardizes free form values to codes; derives new values through calculations on existing fields; merges data from multiple sources in order to generate a consolidated source for the target.
Develops processes which load the transformed data into end target systems (database, file, application, etc.); may apply different techniques based on business needs including inserting new data into target systems.
Develops and maintains databases, to include documenting standards for use, control, updating and maintenance of databases within internal business areas.
Leads special projects requiring commensurate analytical expertise and the development of
executive level presentations to include identifying, defining, and implementing best-in-class analytical practices.
Ensures that appropriate measures and reports are defined and implemented to assess
organizational performance and/or initiative performance.
Evaluates input and output requirements and formats, studies system requirements, operational practices, procedures, and problems; proactively monitors systems and recommends improvements; designs modifications, researches, designs, and implements new systems or modifies existing systems to increase automation and improve efficiencies.
Researches new methodological and statistical approaches and looks for opportunities to apply those approaches in a real-world framework.
Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications (Education & Experience and Job Knowledge & Skills)
Education & Experience
Bachelors Degree in Computer science, actuarial science, economics, engineering, finance, mathematics, statistics, or a related field, and Five years of progressively responsible work-related experience that demonstrates successful analytics work supporting business requirements, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience performing complex descriptive and predictive
business-based analysis required
Requires understanding and experience with multiple programming languages
and relevant applications including SQL and ETL required
Three or more years of progressively responsible work-related experience that
demonstrates successful data, programming, and analytics work driving business
Insurance Industry Experience preferred

Advanced knowledge and skills in a programming language (C++, Java, Python, or R preferred)
Advanced knowledge and skills in SQL & Relational Databases
Knowledge of actuarial systems and pricing methodologies preferred
Intermediate knowledge of statistical framework necessary to support data analysis
