Summary

Seeking Nebraska-licensed attorney to provide legal services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking, including representation in protection order and domestic relations proceedings. The Client Attorney may also provide direct support to unrepresented college students in Title IX cases on the major urban college campuses in Omaha.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Represent clients in Douglas County domestic relations and protection order cases.
  • Provide competent, diligent, and trauma-informed representation to clients on individual caseload.
  • Conduct legal outreach and provide on-the-spot legal advice.
  • Provide trauma-informed representation to self-represented clients through Technical Assistance for Self-Represented Clients (TASC) Program and monthly walk-in legal advice clinic.
  • May obtain ATIXA certification to serve as Title IX Advisor for student complainants in Title IX and campus disciplinary proceedings.
  • May work closely with Title IX Coordinator and/or campus advocates at local colleges and universities to facilitate referrals and outreach activities.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous client documentation and timekeeping practices.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Support development of WCA Legal Program and Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) grant implementation.
  • Engage in effective collaboration with other WCA programs and community partners.
  • Provide outreach regarding WCA clients and services.
  • Complete internal continuing education and Nebraska CLE requirements.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
     

Education/Experience

Juris Doctor (JD) degree and license to practice law in the State of Nebraska required.

Preferred Experience (salary Commensurate With Experience)

 

  • Protection order, domestic relations and/or civil litigation experience;
  • Title IX Advisor administrative proceeding experience;
  • Experience with T-visa, U-visa, VAWA relief, and/or Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) cases;
  • Representing clients who have experienced trauma, clients with limited resources, and/or clients who are Limited English Proficient (LEP);
  • WCA also strongly values the personal, lived experience of individuals from all backgrounds.
     

Qualifications
 

  • Understanding of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking issues.
  • Ability to work with a diverse client population and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Good working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet and PowerPointograms.
  • Ab,ility to operate standard office equipment.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Responsible for providing own transportation to meet with clients and other community providers.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule (one evening per month).
  • Maintain confidentiality standards of the organization and in accordance with HIPPA standards.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Women’s Center for Advancement.
  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who are bi-lingual

The employee will be in a normal office environment while performing the duties of this job and will be required to sit, stand, walk and occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. In addition, employee will be required to drive to other locations and carry presentation materials to conduct company business.
