Overview

Mental Health Respite Mission Statement: The Mental Health Respite Program will provide structure and supportive services to participants to aid them in successfully transitioning to the community environment at the lease restrictive level of care.

Summary/Primary Purpose:  Provide direct service to adult individuals who experience mental health issues and homelessness. Interact with program participants and staff with empathy, dignity, and respect.  Model social, communication, time management, organizational, problem solving and work ethic skills for residents and staff.  Ensure program policies and procedures, and emergency procedures are followed by program participants and staff.  Model flexibility and open-minded attitude for program participants and staff. Willing to utilize trauma informed practices and have a philosophy that is client centered and recovery orientated

Schedule: Full-time; Monday-Friday 12:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain open communication with co-workers through shift briefings and emails regarding staff, program, building and participant announcements, barriers, and progress.
  2. Complete check of unit (sharps, doors locked, etc.) and participants’ whereabouts at beginning, end and throughout shift (hourly). Document findings in the appropriate setting.
  3. Review and maintain files weekly by making corrections as indicated by reviewers as well assuring the file is in order as indicated by File Directory.
  4. Complete the appropriate and necessary documentation regarding participants progress notes, program and building related incidents/activities in accordance with the policy and procedures.
  5. Prepare and monitor meals for participants. This may be heating prepared food or cooking from ingredients in coordination with the posted menu.  Document participant meal intake and behavior in contact notes and on meal count data sheets
  6. Prepare and administer groups for participants in 45 minute timeframe and document topic, participant, and behavior in each participant’s file on the appropriate documentation.
  7. Plan and deliver monthly and holiday recreational activities for participants.
  8. Communicate with professionals and other supports of the participants through phone, fax, email, etc., to coordinate services or support systems in a professional, factual, accurate, and timely manner while upholding confidentiality.
  9. Transport participant when necessary to complete goal related activities or in accordance to policy and procedures for on-going treatment concerns.
  10. Observe medications being taken by participants and complete appropriate documentation.
  11. Provide a welcoming environment for all participants by completing the following:
    1. Seek socially appropriate interaction with participants in a professional manner, treating them with dignity and respect.
    2. Respond to participants’ request for their belongings or basic personal need items in a timely manner while treating them with dignity and respect.
    3. Maintain professional and ethical boundaries while participant is receiving and after they have received services. Deliver trauma informed care.
    4. Monitor participants for pre-warning signs of crisis and intervene to prevent crisis.
    5. Deliver crisis intervention when needed by participant regarding personal, symptomatic, or system related issues.
    6. Provide referrals and resources to participant as needed or requested by the participant.
  12. Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  13. Adhere to participants’ requests for food, tobacco, etc., accompanied by a brief assessment of their wellbeing and make appropriate accommodations to assure safety.
  14. Set up weekly medi-sets and set up monthly MORs for assigned participants. (5%)
  15. Complete inventory of participants’ belongings at time of intake, throughout their stay, and at discharge.
  16. Assist and monitor participants discharging from program and clean room to prepare for next intake.
  17. Complete Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) initial training within 6 months and refresher course annually.
  18. Complete 12 hours of intensive on-going training per year based on program/participant population need such as Emergency Protective Custody training (EPC), Board of Mental Health (BOMH), Behavioral Health Diagnosis, symptomology and interventions annually.
  19. Will continue to utilize and refine trauma informed skills through training and practice.
  20. Count and add new medications to MORs when needed.
  21. Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the position.
  22. Driving is an essential function of the position.
  23. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. One to two years related experience preferred.  

Qualifications:  The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

  1. An individual must be 19 years of age or older and able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  2. Ability to be flexible and able to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  3. The ability to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.
  4. Administrative skills to include utilization of standard office equipment, data entry, 10-key, attention to detail and filing.       
  5. Good communication skills both written and spoken, and ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  6. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters. 

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business. Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 90 days of hire, as established by The Salvation Army. 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Attain Medication Aide Certification within 90 days of employment. Attain CPR/First Aid Certification within 6 months of employment.  Keep certification and update when required.
